Picking up new rx8 Saturday, anything I should know?
Hi, new to the board, I'm picking up a brand spanking new RX8 240 with full body kit in shiney red on Saturday. V excited. Current motor is a Cooper S, anything I should watch out for, or tips on running it in etc.
Cheers for any help

You can't get automatic RX8s in the UK. No call for it. Why would you want an automatic sports car? Half the fun is flicking through the gears, no?
We call them manual gears as well, not sticks.
It's getting all very cultural around here! lol

I read oil can be a problem. I'm not much of a motor head, does a light come on when I need to change, or should I check the oil very often?
I got a 300-400 mile round trip on Saturday, which should be long enough to break it in? I'll have to be a little carefull anyway, jumping from the 170 horses in my mini to the 240 in the RX8 is making my palms sweat just thinking about it!

if the light comes on, you are already a quart (or more) down on oil, so at least until you get an idea of how your driving habits effect your oil consumption, check it every other week or so. its not that bad really, you can just do it when getting gas...takes about 30 seconds.

oh, just remember, don't go nuts with it until the car is up to operating temperature...in other words, keep it below 3-3.5k rpm until the temperature needle has been in the middle for a minute or so.

Before you drive off the lot, check EVERYTHING! Pain in the *** to drive x miles, only to find a defective part that is only recognizable to the dealer you bought it from, then having to drive back up to deal with it (assuming they will replace/repair it). So, check all corners, sides, inside, etc. for any tear, dings, crack, etc. A little paranoid, but hey...saves you $$ from having to drive back to get it resolved!

Check the brake rotors for rust and make a big deal about how ugly they look. Have the dealer indicate on the paperwork that they will clean and paint them with high-temp brake caliper paint the next time you bring the car in for service.
All the rotors on the cars at my dealer are rusted and look very ugly. I repainted my own with the high-temp caliper paint and they look oh so much better.
Don't worry about the oil consumption. It is over blown for the most part. You should expect to consume approximately one qt. (US) in 3,000 statute miles. As long as you check it regularly and add a little now and then to bring the level up to the top mark you will be OK. Fuel mileage will depend to some extent on your driving style. I averaged just over 20 MP(US)G for 8,000 miles, which is perfectly acceptable as far as I'm concerned.
