Pics of OEM spark plugs changed at 36,602 miles

I didn't think they looked too bad but the new ones are in there now. No difference in performance but I wasn't having any problems either.

I did mine today at 33.5k miles (still oem AFAIK).
2004 6 speed RX8.
Owned since new.

It run soooooo much better now. I did super flood it three times.. so I should have checked them before now.

FWIW- I found some at an area O'Reilly Auto Parts store in stock, and they price matched on line prices.

Wow - all these plugs make mine look pristine. I pulled mine out, no deformations, no deposits, just with the center worn down too far to spark in boost.

How hard is it to get at the plugs on this engine if all I've got to work with is wheel ramps?

One jack stand and take the driver's side wheel off. Remove the little rubber cover for access and whoever recommended getting the wobble extension, great advice! I found this combo 13/16th spark plug socket / wobble extension at Advanced Auto today before the change. Worked purrrfectly. It's pretty easy Bub.

Remember: (L)ower = leading and (T)op = trailing plug. Also remember to get a packet of anti-seize and a packet of dielectric grease.

Where are the other two plugs?

And FWIW- I did super flood my car three times on these oem original plugs.

Does premixing help with plug build up?

And FWIW- I drive my car (once properly warmed up) like a hated step child.

All 4 of my plugs are identical. I run BUR-9EQPs (2 shimmed) in all four slots. That was a picture of one of my plugs against a new one to compare how much the center had eroded. From what I remember, all 4 plugs were similar though that one was probably the worst.

It's easy to do it using the jack from the trunk. Jack the LF and remove wheel, remove the flap with a philips head, get (3) long extensions and a socket/ratchet. It takes 20 minutes to do without rushing

Mine didnt feel like it was sluggish or anything but when i changed the plugs/wires/coils i noticed a big difference... it gradually degrades that you dont really notice over time, that is until you get it all back at once

from what I have seen locally, the coils are lasting about 20k-25k

but hey its your car, do what makes you feel comfortable

I wonder how much the gap has changed in those 36K miles. Can you measure? I have found that these iridium plugs in normal use open up the gap very little.

I probably should have changed coils when I did 30K servicing with new plugs. I'll do it at 60K.

Is it just me or does it seem kinda stupid to waste money buying iridium plugs when they can't actually be used for the life of the car because they'll foul in 30,000 miles? Why not just get platinums and save a few bucks on something you'll have to replace anyway?

I have tried them all, believe me. The OEM are the best for the money and can be picked up for $80 or less( I paid $56 for my last set). I love the "OEM" iridium plugs. One of the down falls of the rotary is how ruff they are on plugs. Now people are getting 35-45K under good conditions, some more if its mostly hi-way. Piston engines 100K no problem.

use your factory jack remove driverside front tire and access is easy

Amazon has iridiums for $16 each:

and NGK wires if you need them for $25

search RX 8 spark plugs wires are on page 2, NGK ZE81 set.

If the rest of the car it's in were as nice as the engine itself, yes, it would be nice.
