"PING-PING"???
I have a 04 A/T with 30K on it and all the latest recalls done. For the first 20k miles I could go back and forth between running reg- 87oct or prem-91 without pinging. Now I have to run prem or it will ping? What do you think, normal, or carbon build-up? Can anyone run reg all the time without pinging? Should I run some additive. Just run prem and dont worry? IDEAS?

I wouldnt worry about saving 2$. Fill up with what Mazda suggests. As for the technical reasons, someone will surely suggest it has something to do with the timing X. X being the computer, a belt... Or the gas station your using is watering their gas too much, and your actualy using 84.

cars don't like switching back and forth. You need to run the tank empty before you switch.
Then use 3 tanks before the ECU can catch up to the change.
Your playing havoc with the learning ECU.
Also all gasolines are not the same.

What changed? I run 87 without any problems. Were you pre-mixing & stoped?

I have an '05 AT and I run Shell V-POWER 91 octane and mine pings all the time. If the car has to idle for a few minutes and then I go it is much worse. It takes it a while to come around and not ping so bad.
I just had the engine recall and they put in new leading plugs and flashed the computer, and I think it is worse.
It passed all the other testing. But I can not run regular or mid-grade, here in Phoenix.
I think I am going to go back to the dealer and bitch somemore.
I have noticed that outside air temp plays a big part in this problem.
Seems the hotter it is the easier it is for it to ping.
I think that idleing (low rpm's) has a tendency to lean out the computer, and it takes it a while to catch up to running richer at high rpm's.

I did not change anything. The car changed, it wants prem only now. Never premixed on any of my seven rotary cars. I never had a rotary that pinged like this one does. The only change was the PCM upgrades, I got them as they became avalible. All the oil changes and services were done in less than 1/2 of what was the manual says. It seems possible that with the rich mixture to save the emissions, they have carboned up the engine and now it PINGS! What can I do but hope it wont ping on prem-fuel cause the next step is you know what........

It seems to me the people on here that Pinged on prem-91 got new engines. Wish there was a way to clean out the carbon build up because It gets redlined all the time and its not helping. Any IDEAS???

Well you could do what I do ,,go down the freeway in second gear at about 6000 rpm for a mile and that should clean it up, if you think it's carbon.
I don't think I can have any carbon in my engine due to the rpm range mine stay's in during most driving. So what is making mine ping also? 7500 miles on it.
The prior RX-8 AT we had,had 27,000 and it pinged also.
I also have never had pinging in any of my rotaries i the past.
It just seems to me that it is to lean on the fuel mix and thus this pinging occurs.

I think there was a post on water injection on the site somewhere.
That works good for carbon removal. Just don't do it till you find some hard facts on how and what to do.
I passed that Emission Recall the dealer said. But I will mention that it still pings when I see them next week. Don't know about a new engine from pinging.

****, I eat lunch in my 8 everyday with the ac running. I do buzz it pass 6000 everyday. I do run 87, maybe the faster burning fuel leaves less carbon build up?

Mine passed emission too, and runs fine on prem-fuel. I just wonder why it ran 20k on reg-87 and now it wont. What about MMO(Marvel Mystery Oil), could it run in oil or in gas and clean it out? Have you tried any additives?

Before you do any heavy duty additions to your gasoline - try running 2 tanks of Chevron hi test thru it - it will clean a lot of gunk off - if that doesn't work, have it retunned and the points rechecked - there is something that is causing late firing - bad gas is usually the first cause, water in the lines the second, and something funny with the plugs and wires 3rd.

Funny how some people will read/follow "The Book"(maybe not you) on what THEY want to follow but sticks so many after market parts on there 8 and wonder if it will void the warranty. Think they feed/take care of their bodies that good? eat the right things, ect.
