unless you are driving with the CAI under water there is an extremely small chance of water ruining the engine.

What most likely happened is that the water shorted out something. Coils, alternator, blown a fuse.

Depending on the quality of your connections (ie, no-one has been loosening them without retightening them) then you should be fine for your trip. Just have the CEL read ASAP

Check the fuses in the engine compartment. Look in this thread for the location of the engine fuse box https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-major-horsepower-upgrades-93/diy-how-dyno-rx8-132083/

RX-8 Club friends,

I think all is okay! Went to pick up my ex for some lunch and the CEL was gone. Did a few errands, each time started up perfect, no CEL. Everything feels normal. I am so relieved.

I want to thank you all so much for your help. I've seen a lot of leg humping, soul selling, bitching and whining in the short time I've been a member. And in a crunch, you guys were all there for me. Special thanks to DarkBrew who was even willing to meet me and check the code. So you all are top guns in my opinion.

Thank you and have a merry holiday.

Your friend, zerobio.

Glad to hear that it all worked out. The CEL will reset after a few drive cycles if the condition that caused it is absent.

BTW the bitching and other crap only happens when we're bored...

good to hear that it seems okay. when it comes down to it, most on here are willing to help a fellow rotorhead in a time of need. it's only when people are obviously not even trying to help themselves that they find themselves the target of flaming. that, and as darbrew said, when we're bored

water getting into your engine isn't a big deal either - as long as it's not enough to choke the engine. some of us intentionally feed water into the engine via vacuum lines to clear out carbon.

CT, rx8club FTW. I've only ever gotten great help here and mostly lurk at the OT stuff when I'm tired of reading seriousness and want a good laugh. Thanks.

mysql101, good to hear this!

Know what?

I have had my RX8CLUB decal sitting around for a while, wasn't sure where/if to put it. You guys have inspired me to get off my dyno butt and put it on the car. If I can, I'll do it before my week trip to Ottawa, but either way I'll post a pic when it's on and I'll ride with pride as a way to say thanks for your concern about my 8.

I bet what you got is a P0103 or similar code which reads that the intake has had some abnormal MAF reading. When that water hit your car front, good chance a sheet of water temporarily covered your intake filter, which impeded airflow. Your engine will throw a code if it senses a huge drop in air for the MAF.

3 weeks ago, I was out driving at night, and I felt like flooring the car in 2nd gear down a straight. I got a CEL code thrown at me, I took it to the dealer and it was the P0103 code which was for "too much air". That night, it was -10, so I figure air was really dense, and it was night time too, so oxygen levels higher and all.. plus the speed of the car accelerating, there was a huge influx of fresh oxygen.

Take it to a dealer to get the code checked soon, if it drives fine, the code might clear itself after 24 hours.
Footman,

Thanks man! It's okay now but I was looking at the cai and I could see the edges of what looked like a pinkish cheesecloth/mesh pretty far along the tube towards the engine (not the front). Didn't know if that was the "sock". You know, I'd pay somebody to give me a quick tutorial on the 8 engine. Someone should do a youtube video or even sell videos on basic stuff, mod installs, etc. If they exist for the 8, I'd buy them.

Yep it did in this case. And if you ask in the right way, the help will come ...

Hey....that sticker adds 5hp, put it on immediately!
Glad it looks like it was no big deal.......I had it figured as something just got wet and it didn't like it, so it thru the CEL. Now that it's dried......err.....ummmm......melted away and evaporated, it went away. Like someone said....after a few drive cycles, if the error isn't present any longer, it will clear itself. Now.................just have a sfe trip and a great Holiday!

Haha, 5hp. Could have used that on the highway ... didn't put the sticker on yet but promise i will. Made the highway trip from London to Ottawa with no problems. There was very little traffic and the roads were pretty dry except highway 416 (off hgwy 401) into Ottawa. Anyhow, all's well, no CEL for a couple days and I'm very relieved. Thanks man!

CEL Light

Don't recall the poster. But he is correct.

if the CEL light is blinking. you should lower the rpm's and pull over immedietely on off main traffic. A blinking CEL is the OBD system getting reports from a sensor that it is getting continuous 'out of spec readings'.

A solid CEL is what the OBD is reporting as current data and should be investigated. Getting the CEL codes ASAP is always important, but the blinking ones typically means a repeated failure if not of a sensor but of a part that a sensor is monitoring (MAF, Spark, o2 Sensors, Compression). I think the OBD default is after 10 start cycles and no repeated errors, and or of any new errors the solid CEL light turns off.

Have a happy new years!

fyi in comparison - I've got a current CEL and blinking CEL on startup for the 2nd rotor mis-firing, but after 10 seconds.. the stumble goes away and it idles normally and the blinking CEL i get goes solid. "Time to change spark plugs, i got 72k miles on my 04'"

so long story short, just be pro-active on the blinking CEL lights.

Update:

I went to the dealer today to get scanned for codes after my engine light (CEL) had come on when I drove through a large puddle...actually it was more than a puddle, a big friggin hole with water in it. Although the cel went out the same day, I wanted to be sure everything was okay, a week or so later.

There were no stored codes in the system and it passed whatever other tests they did. There was one PCM update available which I got.

Hate to bring this up again but that's the conclusion. I'll avoid large volumes of water in the future.

Yea, that's what I do. Also, if you're following a car, follow in their trails because it displaces the water for you. If their rear wheels are chucking **** loads of water keep your distance too... Don't want to get it in the grill.

orrrr.. you can drive fast enough to hydro plane over the water.... used to do it in my Nissan s13 all the time..... just remember to step on the clutch and off the gas as it lifts ontop of the water

It's kinda like riding on powder at full speed if you ever snowboarded...
