I think it's the European spoiler anyway, even though I can't find a direct confirmation now. Someone mentioned that the lip spoiler is required in Europe for efficiency reasons. Also, if you look at the Civic Hybrid and the Accord Hybrid, they both add these lip spoilers to decrease drag. I don't think that they would add any spoilers to those cars to make them look cooler or actually increase the drag.

I like spoilers on some cars, but not the 8. With the "MAZDA" logo, the RX-8 logo, the big "flying owl" logo, the two shiny tailpipes, the "busier than a bishop's hat" taillights AND the rear rotary accent, the rear of the 8 is already too busy, visually, IMHO.
