pop sound

after my car is warmed up and everything.

when I rev up to like 8k in parked (neutral)
it makes the pop sound at my exhaust.
my friend looked from back, he hears the noise but he doesnt see like smoke comes out of exhaust or anything.

Is this normal?

Do you have an aftermarket exhaust? Ify ou do then it's probably unburnt fuel being burnt in your exhaust by the heat.

The pop is your exhaust gas breaking the sound barrier. You see the rx-8 is so fast the exhaust gas travels at a speed quicker that the motor can generate for the wheels, thus produce a minimal amount of thrust, or Delta V, from the rear end. You will notice while at a stop in neutral on a slight downgrade that if you rev up the engine the car will actually begin to move forward, this is the gas pushing the car forward. I would not worry so much about the pop then!

Ps, JK

or sometimes if you have an exhaust leak, or a hole, the pop is the sound of air getting sucked in for the burning of the remaining fuel, pretty much as SNTP is saying

Yeah not sure why you are up in the 8k range parked in neutral, but, occasional popping sounds from exhaust not all that uncommon. There is nothing wrong, dont worry bout it.

I have a stock exhaust.
I got rear ended 2 months ago
and a shop replaced the whole exhaust system (stock ones)
I was making sure... like they didn't install anything wrong.
so there is nothing i should worry about.

oh yea rev up to 8k in N
haha - is it bad for a car?

It's better to get it up to 8k in 2nd or 3rd gear. or 4th if there are no cops around

8k in third gear is around 80 mph, dunno bout you, but that is speeding pretty good already, and revving it up to 8k in neutral is pretty much just a waste of gas, but when your in gear, it removes carbon deposits
