Popping from Exhaust

Recently I have noticed that on hard acceleration, as soon as I take my foot off the gas and shift, there is a popping or sputtering sound coming from the exhaust??? It is not quite a backfire, but it just started doing this a few thousand KM ago? Anyone notice this, or is this a product of the new flash? My gut tells me there is something wrong with the exhaust or the CAT? Any ideas?

I pulled over the opened the door so I could here it, and sure enough, when I rev the engine and release the pedal, the sound is very present?

its a back fire, the reason it sounds differnt than the normal pop is cause the stock exhaust is very quiet and the catalytic converter is the size of my miata.....it tends to muffle the POP into more of a 'fup fup'

i love that sound, and with my exhaust, it is a lot louder now. It sounds really cool if you can get somewhere that it will echo.

let off throttle abruptly at high rpm, such as upshifting at redline or when heel-toe downshifting going into a corner.

My RS2000 has the same sound when I let off the trottle (mostly in the lower ranges)... A nice rumble / pop gurly sound... It's quite nice I must say.
