Possible damage (other than to ego...)??

Ok, so what damage could possibly be done if you happen to miss a gear and downshift too far when ur runnin a 350z? (possibly to 2nd from 5th, tires screeching, no audible noise due to loud music playin over stereo)?

Kinda stupid, but...

Any comments/insight would be appreciated

I hear that the engine itself can handle 11K+ rpms just fine, so I believe that most of the wear would be on the transmission. As long as you weren't there for too long there shouldn't be too much stress.

I've never owned a 350Z, and I doubt many people here have either. You might want to check thier site.

nah, honestly i didn't expect to own him. I just wanted to see first hand how I'd keep up. Initially though, he didn't seem like he was gonna go, so I just accelerated moderately (in 6th starting at around 75 mph) to pass slower traffic. He then jumped over behind me (I'd gotten into a long exit only lane that goes about 1/2 a mile up a hill before the exit, so there were basically 3 lanes) and ran up on me HARD. I downshifted to 5th and stomped it, but he was still comin mad hard. That was when the ugliness occured, as I tried to downshift again and probably missed 4th and went to 2nd. He then proceeded to shoot past like I was barely movin (we had to have been above 100)...

According to a friend of mine, that 350 probably was a sleeper which belongs to a speed shop around here, which was boosted and built (I had my music on and couldn't hear anything aside from the music). That would make sense, becasue I stock 350s can't be THAT fast!!! I was about 4-5 cars on him when he jumped, and he ran me down like I was peddling a tricycle...

I need boost...

EDIT: BTW Ishu, I wasn't there long at all... Whenever the wheels started hopin and skreechin, I immediately stomped the clutch...

I was so embarrased...

......probably not a sleeper, since he already had a running start.

For a torqueless car, stomping 6th of 5th gear at 75 mph is futile. Fourth gets you closer to the power band. Third gear is where you should have downshifted to (straight from 6th), after rev matching at around 7500 RPMs of course, since third gear redlines at around 85ish. That may not even be enough for a stock Z, anyway, since it was coming at you at 90mph to begin with.

edit: friggin typos

Understood...

I didn't go immediately to 3 or 4 cause I didnt' wanna over rev (and we see how that worked out for me...), but as you stated I woulda been better served by goin straight to 3 or 4...

Live and learn I guess...

Hey dumbass, read the thread... It's not about the race.

It's about potential damage done by an accidental improper downshift. The background info is necessary to provide context and enable people that actually READ to make VALID comments...

Were u saying that as a good thing or a bad thing? LOL

yeah... fact is, I rarely if ever go 6 to 4 or 5 to 4 that often (usually, normal traffic highway driving allows for the 6 to 5, or 5 to 3). That's ok though, I'm still tryna get used to doing atypical shifts on this gearbox. It's a much shorter throw than it was on my 91 celica gt...

Oh well...

Fortunately for me, dumb ***, I doubt any damage was done, but thanks for the well wishes and kind words... jack ***... Fortunately, if something DOES go wrong(which appears unlikely), I can get it fixed...

I love retards

Anyway, I think I'll try to make better downshifts from now on...

Hey Jackass, you were racing a 350Z. Not my fault you don't know how to drive your car.

yeah, we all speed, but we don't street race. Unlike this fool.

Apparently, you missed the whole "reading is fundamental" and "hooked on phonics" campaigns, because u obviously haven't mastered the art of interpreting the little symbols that we call letters (which are put together to form words, which combine to form sentences, etc. etc., which ultimately are used to express thoughts -- Something that you've demonstrated is beyond your grasp...).

As I stated previously (why bother saying it again when u either can't or refuse to read, but here goes anyway for those that can): I knew I wouldn't beat a stock 350 with a stock rx-8. I did, however, set out to see how fast they were -- and in that regard, I succeeded. The point of the thread (as I also said earlier) was to get the RELEVENT and INTELLIGENT opinions/responses of INTELLIGENT forum members on any possible damage that my car sustained as a result of a mistake on my part (which seems to be no damage at all, much to your disappointment...).

I know success may be a foreign concept to you, but try hard to indulge the rest of us...

Thanks

Probably didn't do anything. And you probably shouldnt have your stereo up that loud while driving that fast.

Did the tach go over 10K? or did you get out of it before that? If you didn't go over 10k it was just the tranny and clutch that took the brunt of it.

You are absolutely correct about the stereo, and I appreciate your comment...

I don't think it went over 10K, but I can't say for sure as I didn't look. I do know that I stomped the clutch as soon as it happened, so I'm pretty sure it didn't...

Surely, time will tell...
