power window breakdown

My driver side power window just crapped itself for no reason? Now it goes up 1/3, stops, iv got to pull it abit, goes up another 1/3, stops, pull it again then closes and grinds really loudly if u keep the button held down. Is this a common problem in rx8s? Or one of those rare ones. Im thinkings its the regulator but if its common and anyone knows a simple way to fix it myself ill do that, other wise if anyones had the same problem could someone give me the price they payed to have it fixed because for some reason out of two mechanics iv spokin too no one will quote a reg plus labor unless I want it fixed.

Not common at all.

Take door apart check it out.
gears could be sticking. Greese or new motor.

Check out DIY section for speaker install.

It's not more common for the RX-8 than it is for any car that uses that type of motor/regulator assembly. But yeah, it sound like the nylon gears are stripped out.

For a mechanic to replace it, you are probably looking at about $80 for the part and $150-180 for labor (presuming you are in the states.)

Mine just crapped out last week, but it was covered under warranty.

I'm pretty sure it was my fault, the 8's doors always need to be shut a little harder than normal cars because of the rear door setup. I realized last week that I've been getting a little carried away with this :

Be glad you don't own a jetta. All of a sudden, thump, the window just falls into the door, won't come back up. Happened to both front windows. Don't miss that at all...

I just had to replace mine a couple of weeks ago. I bought a reconditioned one from O'reilly Auto parts for about $70. You can also find them on ebay used for a lot less. The door panel is fairly easy to remove also. This is a realitivly simple job.

If you are at all mechanically inclined, it's a pretty easy job. Getting the door panel off is probably the hardest part (and that's really not difficult.)

Tip: After you get the new part in, and before you reinstall the door panel, be sure to run the window up and down a few times to ensure there are no adjustments to be made.

Or you could go to a glass place, ie windshields??, the ones who sell and install them.
Let them look at it and tell you what it will take to fix it.
Stay close and see how they take it apart.

2011 Sport. The passenger's window would auto-roll up 1/2 way and
reverse (pinch). I had to hold switch up for a few weeks. One day at
the top of travel, the motor didn't shut off, and could hear the motor
chattering and gear stripping. Then the window died totally - buttons
went dark, nothing happened when pressed. Dealership wanted to replace
driver's side switch module and passenger's motor. I didn't do because
having a functioning passenger window isn't really worth $900 to me.
Car battery was 34 months old and getting weak. Replaced that and the
window came back to life! Goes up and down, but chatters at fully up.
I turned off the lockout button to prevent accidents/more damage.
the regulator and motor separate? Service guy assumed a single
part. Can the car sense a window fault and program out the window to
prevent damage? What caused it to come back after battery replaced and
some programming reset? The lockout button was not in play

The grinding sound happens when the plastic gears inside the motor assembly strip. The motor assembly is about a $50 part. Dorman brand has all the same markings as the Mazda part. It is easy to replace, and should take less than 1 hour. I just did mine a few weeks ago.

I'll look for the part, thanks! Still not sure how the entire passenger window circuit can go dead and a battery replacement can bring it all back to life
