Your car will tell you what it needs. Mine needs mid or prem during those hot days of summer. I can run reg when its cooler say 60F and below. If you hear the MIAC or preignition sound of a rotary you need to go up a grade or two.

Now with the prices at the pump rising and rising, what will you guys use?
The gas mileage is killin me. I'm usually putting in almost $50 a week. Now with the prices going up it'll probably be more.

It boils down to this....run the octane YOU want to run. If it does fine with 87, then stay with it. If not, step it up. This discussion has been run into the ground and everyone has their opinion on it.

One a long, straight and boring highway trip, I'll sometimes fill up with mid-grade. As the following article points out, it shouldn't hurt your baby, and it will save you money.

Let me tell you i remember when gasoline was sky high at that time it was 3.12 cents.. whcih now its 3.45 here in austin texas..
I ran it on 87 for a couple of months. and when priced went down to like 2.25 i began to use premium.. the very first tank switching back my car bogged at the stop light.. and seems as if i t wanted to die.. and WOOSH the rpms just rose to like 3K rpm and then dropped back to normal.. NEVER downgraded on my gas ever again..
like mentioned above its only 2-4 bucks more. sure it add up but hey we got a sports car not a economical gas greedy car.. Our cars are alchoholics.. if they arent gettin that they need they can get a little grouchy!

I will use what mazda says to use.my hearing is not good I would not hear the engine protesting if I ran a cheaper grade of gas.also the 40th anv is not my regular ride, that is my pickup, my moto guzzi or my ural. the mazda is something to take out and have fun with,

Use about 1/3 93 octane and 2/3 89 octane. Typically I put 3 gallons of premo then fill it with the cheap stuff (OK 87 octane since no gas is cheap these days).
That will boost it to 91 octane. Just a reminder; the relationship of mixing to increase octane is NOT linear. a 50/50 mix of 87 and 93 will not give you 90, it will be closer to 92.

I only put premium in it, which is usually about 92/93 Octane around here. What are your guys opinion on the %10 ethanol (I can get that at our Tesoro) and it is about 94 octane or so.
Has anyone ever noticed a difference using Chevron's Techron? I cannot seem to tell, but my brother puts it in his old Plymouth Laser and he says it makes a noticeable difference.

Tested premium 93 oct in my car and saw no difference in performance, gas mileage was a little worst. Have been using 87 oct for a year and a half with out an issue. Rotaries actually run better on lower oct. Manuel states you can use it. If your not pinging your just throwing money down the drain.
It's your call but over the life of the car (150K) You'd be saving around $2000 in to days terms. Don't know about you but I could do a lot better things with $2K then give it to the filling station.

I am also curious what your opinions are of the 10% ethanol. It seems everywhere I go these stickers are popping up. Most places I have looked say you get worse fuel enconomy from it.

93 FTW !
I tried some 87 in my tank last summer, It retards the timming like hell so I just went easy on it, as soon as it hit 1/2 tank I fill it back with 93 the problem is gone.
I want to try 89 and Sunoco's 91, maybe this coming summer.
