Premix and winter storage

I, like many members that live in the northern part of the country on this board, put away the 8 for the season. Instead of having it dormant the entire winter, I do take it out about every other week.

This is the first year I've been using Protek-R, so this will be the first winter with this dilema, which is should I

a) continue to premix as normal
b) use less premix than normal
c) skip it all together

I want to add that I do not use fuel stablizer.

Any input is appreciated, thanks!

Since I read some people's concerns over premixes possibly settling to the bottom of the tank over a long time, I decided to stop using Idemitsu several fillups before garaging my RX-8. I don't know for sure it's necessary, but I have an 09 RX-8, and I doubt premixing is all that necessary to begin with, so it seemed safer to stop doing it for a few fill-ups.

Well if that's the case, maybe I'll fill up a gallon of gas every time I take it out for a drive to agitate the gas tank.

I wonder if the premix is denser than gas...

Premix has a thicker viscosity than gasoline for sure. But I think it's more of the solubility that is in question. I tried to test this using a very crude test:

- Pour a small amount of premix into a clear 16oz HDPE container. In my case, I still used my 4oz Idemitsu Rotary Premix and 2oz FP Plus Gasoline Treatment mixture.

- Add gasoline and shake vigorously.

- Leave sample to sit for a few days.

After I checked my sample, the mixture stayed a light orangish, red hue (from the FP Plus). The Idemitsu premix seems to mix quite well and I did not see any separation. When you add the FP Plus to the premix, the consistency of the mixture becomes much more soluble to gasoline than just premix alone.

Gasoline is known to have sediment, its pure at factory, but all the transportation, sand got into the tubes, dirty/never clean Gasoline station underground tanks/water leaks with crap etc, will always add some junk to the gasoline you pump.

While Premix is bottled at factory in its cleanest form.

and people still want to blame Premix.

Go take a look at cars with over 100K miles, open their tanks, you will find a lot of crap in it.

If you have no ethanol gas avail, I would use that. Ethanol combines with water and goes to the bottom of the tank. i think it otherwise gums up the fuel system too. I don't know about the premix - you could do a test over the same period you leave the car sit.
