is this a problem?

ok so i went and test drove an 04 rx8 6spd today. the car seemed to drive great besides minor stuff that the dealer promised to fix (a/c got kinda warm when sitting at a red light). but the only major issue i have is when we popped the hood it looked like there was some oil on the underside of the hood. i know rx8's burn some oil but is it natural for it to be on the underside of the hood?

Probably forgot to put on the oil filler cap....

There shouldn't be oil on the hood otherwise

its not natural for oil to be on the underside of a hood on any car, regardless of model and make. only thing i can think is that someone forgot to put the cap on and then realized later.

as far as the a/c goes, that's something you are going to have to suck up and deal with. mine is the same way. nothing they can do.

Sounds like the Bose System...trust me...it would probably sound better with blown speakers

With the amount of miles on the car, I would pony up a few bucks to get the engine compression tested before buying. Aside from that, it is a good looking car

the a/c in the 2004 models suck, so it won't get colder! Had mine to the dealer several times, still sucks. Don't worry about the miles, the price seems pretty fair.

the AC in 2004's do not suck. Yours might suck, but don't put mine in that list just because of your car.

My AC is so cold I can see frost blowing in the air sometimes.

The a/c in my 2004 works very well. I can also get mine to blow frost.

Should be less than $100 for an inspection and compression test...take it to a Mazda dealer.....you need the proper tool to do it properly......

Remember...don't "want" it too bad till it checks out...that's how the used car dealers make sales ( and money)

on a mazda compression tester it should( for a good motor with 50,000 +) read 6.5-7.5 on all three apexes 8.0 is brand new... If you want to do it yourself with manual crank compression tester it should be anywhere between 85-95 psi front and rear rotor( making sure that they are even), but typically the rear is just a tad lower.. if you plan on purchasing the car I'd do the mazda test because it can actually tell you if your side seals are bad as well. Hope this helps dude

Have the Mazda dealership run the test at their cost and not yours!

What's with this crap? All 2004's do not have fender rust. Mine has none.

got a 2004 6spd.only had oil in the intake tube from custom made short ram.(pulled in too much air it sucked it out of the engine)if you are in a area where salt is a factor get your car fully undercoated but not near your exhaust or cat.ther should be no oil at all on the hood unless like the other guys said someone left the oil cap off .good luck and welcome!

What the crap? Fender rust? I live by the ocean and I never saw even a tiny dot of rust on mine or anyone else's (aside from the brake rotors). I spend a lot of time both on these forums and hanging out with local RX8 people and this is the first time I've heard of such a thing. What do you do to that poor car!?

Anyway, with that kind of mileage and those wheels, I'd be a little bit wary of where the car has been. I just don't like the idea of buying a modified car - they're usually nothing but headaches since they've usually been driven pretty damn hard. It's very rare that you find someone interested in modifications yet NOT interested in driving the car until the wheels fall off.

+1. I'd keep looking. You should be able to get a bone stock 6spd Sport model for that price if you are looking in the 50k mileage area. Aside from motor compression you have issues of how much wear has been put on the suspension components, all the bushings, the chassis, the trans, differential, etc, etc. not to mention those tires look pretty low profile. The speedo might not read right.
