NJ Problem with my 8

Ok so i went to go move my car yesterday i went down my driveway, i put it in neutral for a minute while waiting for a car to pass when all of a sudden the car started sputtering and i see the RPM needle bouncing, around 1 RPM to 0 and then the car shuts off. I didn't Stahl out. No check engine light nothing. The only thing i've done differently is i've been putting in regular gas lately, cause the economy, trying to save some money. Anyone know what could possibly be wrong? before i take to the dealer i want to see what you guys think. thanks.

Japanese gas is higher in octane than US gas.

So using Cheap gas in a RX.. is just plane wrong.
Don't do it. The engine was designed for low octane gas.

and I agree with the quote above..... its your gas....

And.... Because you have been using cheap gas..... better check your fuel filter it could be clogged.

I would stay with Prem too. Please give us the history on your car. The service it's had and parts replaced. Model year miles, type of driving it gets(long commutes), oil type and consumption, ever flooded, red lined. Just any thing that you can add.
You might have some carbon build up from a lot of short trips and not seeing the red line much. You might run a few cans of Seafoam, BG44K or another carbon cleaner. It could need a fuel filter&pump combo.

i can't even get the recommended 91 where I live, it's either 94 or 89. The price difference is HUGE (like 30 to 40 cents a gallon)

I've been using 89

Were you low on gas? Is your driveway on a hill?

5 bucks.... you can afford the car but not the gas to put in it......

sell the car then you put all the 94 octane you want in your crossfire

If you really wanted to save money in this economy, you would sell this car and get something more fuel efficient that runs on regular. Otherwise, you will run the risk of clogging and will end up paying more in the long run.

Well I figured it was the gas too, so the last week or so i've been putting in shell nitrogen 93 oct. The car has only been to the dealer for minor problems such as my console door is loose, and my steering wheel is rattling. It hasn't been in the dealership for any serious mechanical problems. I also redlined it twice today so hopefully that got some carbon out. I did some research and does that fuel treatment stuff really work?

thanks again for all your help guys. appreciate it!

I'm located in North New Jersey.... Well since I bought the car i only put in premium, but just recently, maybe a month has gone by since i have been using regular, so hopefully there is no damage done.

I doubt it's the gas. You'd be more likely to have ping at high loads with lower octane, but it should idle fine unless it's legitimately bad gas (which has nothing to do with octane rating). Lots of 8s run low octane.

I have not had as good luck with "techron" but it is easy to find and the cheapest.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i'm sure your plugs havn't been changed in a long time, and putting low octane gas in, you're plugs didn't have the spark that they use to, to ignite that low octane gas...thus...it died on you.

drain that gas...put 93 in it if you can, if 91 is that best you can do, run octane booster.

Also, it even recommends you to use premium gas...i've seen tons of cars engines knock on low octane gas...gas is a big deal.

you shouldnt have gotten the car if you didnt want to spend the money on 30 cents more a gallon.

Low octane gas ignites easier than high octane, that's why it is more apt to knock.

Does anyone know if using 87 octane and mixing in octane booster w/ the premix would be cheaper than using 91 octane?
