most mazda's now have electronic steering pumps, and if they lose power or are replaced they need to be reprogrammed, that may be all you have to do, but i believe that it has to be done at the dealer

I still think your steering module needs to be reset. Disconnect your battery and wait a few minutes - that should wipe out any bad programming remaining in the module. Re-connect the battery, turn on the ignition. You should get a steering malfunction lamp. Turn the steering wheel until the wheels go ALL the way to the left, then turn the steering until the wheels go ALL the way to the right and then return the steering wheel to the center. Turn ignition off then on. It should be reset and the light should be out. If the steering is still tight, have to look for a mechanical problem: electric power to the steering rack, binding in the steering column or shaft. Can you get a trouble code from the computer?

ericok, you have it backwards, it is right first (clockwise) then left (counterclockwise). These instructions refer to the DSC but also resets the power steering. p5-45 of the manual:
If the battery is disconnected, the DSC
will be inoperable. In this case, the
DSC OFF indicator light flashes and
the TCS/DSC indicator light
illuminates.
To make the DSC operable, do the
following procedure.
1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON
position.
2. Turn the steering clockwise fully,
then turn it counterclockwise fully.
3. Make sure the DSC OFF indicator
goes off.
4. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF
position, then turn it to the ON
position again.
5. Make sure the TCS/DSC indicator
light goes off.
If the TCS/DSC indicator light and the
DSC OFF indicator light remain
illuminated even after turning the
ignition switch to the ON position,
consult an Authorized Mazda Dealer.

just my 2 cents from working with lame computers. After disconnecting the battery when you are following the steps posted above, reconnect it after at least a minute or two. Dont disconnect and reconnect immediately.

"ericok, you have it backwards,..."
I actually quoted the procedure out of the 2004 Quick Tips booklet which said left-right-center. I would guess from that the order probably doesn't matter. What the quick tips booklet REALLY says is that if the steering light remains on - dealer service is required. Giovanni's problem sounds like it could be more than just resetting the steering angle sensor but, since he said he's willing to pay for the repair himself, he should be able to find a shop willing to fix it (not sure why the dealer would refuse a PAYING customer?).
