Question

I'm seriously considering buying an RX-8 but i'm hesitant because i've read so much about the engine flooding problem. I live in Minnesota and would probably drive the car 2 miles to school and 2 miles back daily. Would the RX-8 be a terrible buy for me even if I took precautions to prevent flooding? Would the engine start in cold weather?

Your thoughts please.

there's a search function on this forum.

Regardless, read this thread: https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discussion-3/few-more-noob-s-125386/

It's right here on the front page. There's probably 5+ topics on page 1 of the general forum that this question gets asked in.

Since you read so much about the flooding you'd think that question would be answered in the FAQ

The "engine flooding problem" was an issue, once upon a time, when the car first came out, for some owners—who would start the car when the engine was cold and then turn it off right away, before the engine had a chance to warm up. (For example, when moving it in the driveway a few feet to get it out of the way of another car.) You're still not supposed to do this. There was a recall and Mazda installed a more powerful starter motor and a bigger battery. This pretty much made the "flooding problem" a thing of the past. Apparently it can still happen—and does, with some owners—but the general consensus here is that this is no longer an issue. Many people, me included, have never flooded their car. (Some even say that now, they'll occasionally forget, start it up cold, turn it right off—and it starts right up normally again, with no flooding. That was apparently somewhat risky in the early days.)

The 8 starts up normally in cold weather like an ordinary car.

The final flashe(s) really finished the problem off. After the flash that goes with 4206f, the engine spins a couple of turns before fuel is injected. Not sure if this flash did the "fuel flow off when cranking with the pedal to the floor" thing, but that removes the need to pull fuses in the event you do flood.
