Question about the ClearShield clear bra for the Rx-8

Hey everyone,

I just got an Rx-8 about a month ago and even though I've been trying to stay away from trucks or getting too close to other cars I already have 4 small paint chips on the front of my car.

So I'm pretty much set on getting a good clear bra ( I hate the way the black ones look )
and the guy who did my tinting is offering a pre-cut product called ClearShield for $500 installed. I just wanted to ask how many of you have heard of or used this product? I did a search on these rorums but not many responses came up about it.

Thanks a lot!

My yellow was getting nailed with chips from day one and I got a similar product (X-Pel) on mine. $500 is a fair price and you will hardly notice it. The things that make sure of is the installer “certified” by the manufacture and if something goes wrong during the install will you be on the hook for getting any replacement sections of product. The install process is the key to getting a good job. Look over his shop, is it clean? Will he do the work inside or out, you want inside. How many has he done?

Have had mine on since October -- best investment for keeping the front chip-free in my book. Five bills is the going rate for a quality job.

Clear bra is the best investment u will have on ur car. I feel so much at ease, knowing that my front and back are protected from idiotic ppl thinking ur bumpers are cushions. U can either get X-pel, RockBlaster or have a skilled installer do a custom job on it. Is the $500 only for the front bumper? Or the hood, mirrors, front bumper (aero pckg if u have one)? Cuz if its for the whole front, decent price. But if its only the front bumper, thats way too expensive.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Yeah the price is for the whole front - the bumper, the hood, and the mirrors. I think I'll probably go ahead and set it up with the guys so I can get it done ASAP.

Also to expo1, he's only been putting these on for the past year but he did a really good job with the tint and does all the detailing jobs for a Honda dealership that's next door to him. He also let me watch them do the tinting and the place is indoors and really clean so I think I'll just take it to him.

The RX8 front bumper is a very difficult installation. You might want to see his work on another 8 that he's done.

For $500 he should also do the headlights.

BTW, there's an entire section in the forum on clear bras.

Hmmm, I tried to look all over for the section you mentioned but I can't find it anywhere... can you give me a link? Thanks!

oops. There used to be a sponsor that did clear bras so there was an entire section devoted to clear bras. I'll PM you.

Only downside to the stuff is large rocks will actually tear it. Then you can see the mark - though it did protect the paint on my car when this happened (three marks so far in 6 years). Also, you have to work hard to clear wax and dirt out of the "L" where the stuff ends and the unprotected paint starts. If you don't it really shows up.

Hmmm, I was wondering how the clear bra would look if a rock damaged it but not necessarily the paint underneath... Oh well, I guess it's something I could live with over having to retouch the paint on my car all the time.

In an update, the guy is putting the clearshield on one of the other employees SUVs so I asked to go over there in the next couple days and see how good of a job he does on it before I get mine done.
