And I agree, double-clutching really isn't too terribly useful thesedays. I find that simple rev-matching leads to a smooth quick shift if I really need it, and involves much less work. Yes, it puts some strain on the synchros -- but that is what they're there for.
It is fun to double-clutch though. Particularly when there's someone in the car who's never driven a stick before and you're pushing the car towards it's limits (probably a bit harder to do in the RX-8 on the street than it is in my Mazda6). Yeah, it's showing off, but a lot of people seem really impressed. It probably doesn't help contribute to the population of mTX owners though that is rapidly dwindling by making it appear a lot more work than it has to be.
