Question Question for the English or Aussies

hello chaps / g'day mates,
I've got a question for yall. Pardon my ignorance, but on standard transmission cars with shifters to the LEFT of the wheel, what is the order of shifting? Is it also "reversed"? That is, is 1st at the top left and 6th the bottom right, or 1st at the top right and 6th at the bottom left? Just curious, know what I mean? Wink wink, nudge nudge. Say no more, say no more!
Sorry...I really ought to ease up on the coffee.
thanks!

Good question...

I don't know but would guess it is the same as left hand drive. Couldn't see them redoing the transmission for right hand drive cars.

1st gear is at the top left, 6th at the bottom right. Accelerator pedal is on the right too

Only need to remember to get in the passenger side and drive on the wrong side of the road when I drive in the US/Europe

I couldn't imagine shifting with my left hand. Would seem kinda odd. I suppose you all would think the same with shifting with the right hand though. :D

I've only ever driven autos on the wrong side of the road... so I can't really compare. Shifting with the left hand is second nature if it's all you've ever known.

the problem is...you get everything at once. Sitting on the wrong side of the car, shifting with the wrong hand, driving on the wrong side of the road. One at a time and it'd be a piece of cake. It took severe concentration not to crash into stuff with the left side of the car for the first couple of days that I was in the UK :D

I disagree. Ok, the shifting thing is probably true, only time I ever did this was in an automatic (under duress). But sitting on the wrong side and driving on the wrong side just go together. If I'd been sitting on the "normal" side, I would've been far more likely to fall into old habits and drive on the "normal"-- i.e., in this case, *wrong*-- side. Keeping the on-coming traffic on your near side just makes sense.

Just imagine how much diversity we would have in the car market if 100 years ago every country had decided to pick the same side of the road.

Don't know how many times I've read about some Euro or American car with a kindling lust only to read that nasty little postscript at the end that there is no intention to produce it in RHD.

My first experience driving on the wrong (ehemm opposite) side was in Australia. The car was Hertz rental and an AT. I had no problem staying in the correct lane, but found it a little challenging to judge the how much space I had on the left side of the car. (Just wasn't used to that perspective.) Also, I think the first time I tried to put the signal blinker on I turned on the windshield wiper instead. LOL.

A friend once let me try his RHD MT car in Tokyo. Because I am right handed, I found shifting with my left hand a little difficult at first, but got used to it after a while.

Really!

No wonder they call them the Virgin Islands. No one lives long enough to get laid. :D :D

Yes, yes, I quite agree there! That part was most definitely disconcerting! (though I'm not convinced it would've been any better in a left-handed car)

I've only driven cars here in the US. But I also have driven right hand drive cars (manual) here in the US. The only prob I had was going through drive thrus and making a right turn at a corner. Although I know of a few drive thru where the drive thru windows is on the right side.
