Question regarding Air filter

Hi everyone - I asked a few questions yesterday because I am just about to purchase an '04 RX8 231PS. I have another question. This car has a large K&N Air filter on it. The noise when accelerating/revving is very loud. I have been to a Mazda dealer and been out in one and the sound is soft with a wine(almost electric engine sounding mixed with a motorbike engine). However this one is really beefy. The noise is definately coming out the front not the exhaust. Can an air filter really make such a difference in noise? Am I being paranoid thinking that the engine sounds too loud compared to a standard one with no air filter mods - or is that normal, and if I were to just put in the standard air filter box then it will sound normal?

Thanks for all the advice.

Standard air filter box(Mazda OEM) would be more quiet. also, the Revi intake box would be more on the quiet side, but would till give you a nice sound.

air filter or air intake? the filter doesn't change the sound although many claim it does. i dropped it in and like the fact you can clean, oil, and be done with it rather than replacing every time but that's about it.

Air filter or Air intake. Not 100% sure. Basically the standard box is not there, instead there is a red pipe going into engine, and then attatched to the pipe is a huge cone shaped filter (K&N)! I am sure that is what is making the noise. But what I am confused about is how just that piece of equipment can make the sound so different to the normal sound. I guess thats normal with a large filter/intake.

Thanks for any replies to this

Yup, the rotary intake is mega-loud without the sound proofing of the OEM box.

That's what I assumed.............the standard box wasn't there. Figured it was just the cone shaped K&N(or such) sitting in the engine bay connected to the air intake on the engine. That will be louder than the box for sure. Again, I have the Revi, which has it own box(plus I have the ram air) and that suits me just fine.
You need to find a stock 8 and take a ride to see if it's really that much louder.

So, the very loud beefy sound of the engine is normal if you have a K&N cone filter? Because it does not sound like a standard rx8 but louder. Its much deeper!

Thanks

Better air flow = more noise.

Defeniately sounds like you have a Typhoon 2 intake system.

Those are usually pretty loud... as you describe.

I have the Revi in mine.
