I leased an RX-8 about 2 years ago, in about a year I will have to give it back (sadly). I have a few questions though…

First off it was bought in California, and I now live in Ohio. Can I return the car here in Ohio?

Secondly, the car is pristine, but I have modded a few things on it. Clear corners, tinted windows, OEM fog lights, and most notably, a Borla exhaust (and the old OEM exhaust has been thrown away). Are these things that will have to be removed before dropping off my car?

the exhaust may get you in trouble.

clear corners, window tint (depending on how dark it is) and fog lights are something that wouldn't stand out from a normal stock car. but a borla exhaust might, depending on the lease inspector. the fact that you threw out the stock one wasn't too smart either.

your inspection will normally be a couple months before your lease end, and at that time if anything comes up that you have to fix, they will instruct you to do so.

 

You think I will be able to drop it in Ohio?

 

Call your leasing company or read the terms of your lease.

Remember, you should also have a buyout option which would enable you to keep the car. Depending on the lease terms, the buyout may not require any inspection.

 

Try telling them that the car comes with clear corners in CA, and the the exhaust system was a required upgrade option for California emmissions standards. Let us know the look on the guy's face when you say that...
