Quick question about grinding gears
Hey bros, I'm setting up a meeting to go look at an R3 this weekend.
To cut to the chase, it's missing 5th and 6th gear. Owner said it was missing 5th when he got it, and the clutch bracket (or something, I know there's a support that's notorious for giving out) bent and he ground 6th.
Now, I'm up to replacing the transmission and replacing the clutch. What concerns me more is if there's any other potential issues this could've caused anywhere else. This would be my first rotary car, and I want to make sure I don't make any major mistakes LMAO.
Engine wise it's probably good, rebuild 20k km ago. Will likely get it compression tested anyways.
Thanks for any info you can provide, I've given a look at the first time buyers list of things to look out for provided by the forum.

That should not have damaged anything outside the trans. But, the fact that someone managed to ruin the trans is not exactly comforting. If the engine was replaced, perhaps they didn't align the powerplant frame properly. Previous owners are the leading cause of current owner problems.

From what I gathered, the owner before the guy selling it ruined 5th. The current owner had the engine redone, and when he was driving it the clutch bracket bent and he grinded 6th.
I totally get what you mean by it not being comforting that the trans is ruined, throws me off a little too if I'm being honest. As long as nothing else could really be damaged, I think it's ok?
Also the rebuild was done by a fairly reputable local shop (from my understanding).
Thank you for the reply :^)

As stated above, nothing else can be damaged from the transmission losing 5th gear and lilely the synchronizer being bad on 6th gear. Its a self contained unit and if you are replacing it you should be fine. Maybe replace the output shaft (tail shaft) seal before you reinstall it. And remember to clean and lube the pivot ball for the clutch fork.
You can replace the clutch pedal or remove it and weld the bracket. Mazda releases a TSB on the clutch pedal years ago. The spot welds on the bracket break is basically what happens.

Owner said after that he got an "upgraded" bracket to prevent losing any more gears.
Thank you for the reply :^)
