In a Race...
I know it's a stupid question. In a race who would win, a stock cobalt ss or a stock rx8? There is a guy that lives around me and I always see him giving me the eye like "you want some of me." So I just want to know could I beat him?

On the other hand, im not sure how much HP and exhaust frees up on that car, shouldn't be too significant. As the vid shows, it should be a drivers race...go practice

Their 0-60 is pretty close to the RX. Maybe in the high 6seconds. Same for the 1/4mile
I also read on here that they are one of the best FWD cars for handling. Do a search, I remember there was a thread that showed comparisons for a few cars including RX-8, Colbalt SS, 350Z, Evo to name a few.

Read the comments, he's apparently a pretty crappy driver
I'd love to see two equal drivers

Car and Driver just did a comparo of a bunch of factory performance vehicles with timed laps of the 4.2 mile loop of VIR. It was broken into 4 classes based on price segments. All cars were completely stock as they came off the showroom floor, no modifications, including tires.
A track model Z was chosen and placed in the same class as a Chevy Cobalt Supercharged SS, Ford Mustang GT, Honda Civic SI, Mazda MX-5, Mazda RX-8, Mitsu Lancer EVO MR and a VW GTI. Out of all of them, the Z placed first in all sectors of the track and posted the fastest time in the class.
3:12.5 / 78.5 mph - 350Z Track
3:13.5 / 78.1 mph - Mitsu EVO MR
3:19.0 / 76.0 mph - Mazda RX-8
3:20.6 / 75.4 mph - Cobalt SS
3:20.9 / 75.3 mph - Mustang GT
In the class above was the Lotus Elise, Chevy Corvette, Porsche Cayman S, Ford Shelby GT500 and Dodge Charger SRT-8. The Z posted competitives times for them, particularly being bone stock.
3:09.2 / 79.9 mph - Lotus Elise
3:09.3 / 79.9 mph - Chevy C6
3:09.5 / 79.8 mph - Cayman S
3:11.0 / 79.2 mph - Ford GT500
3:18.2 / 76.3 mph - Charger SRT-8
What is impressive is how fast the Elise and Cayman S are compared to the C6, and even more so, the Cobalt compared to the other cars with huge power advantages and RWD.

Brembo Braking System (4-piston caliper with 324x30mm ventilated front discs and 2-piston caliper with 322x22mm ventilated rear discs)
Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC)
Optional burnt orange leather seats

who cares how fast the cobalt is. would you want to drive that POS????
i'm not saying an 8 is the best money can buy...but for the $$ it's darn nice inside and a fun car. the cobalt is probably typical american car crap.
i had teh "pleasure" of renting a ford minivan this past Easter weekend. it was brand new with 13k on teh odomter. the valves made noise, it rode rough, the whole thing was the biggest POS i've ever seen.
my main family car is a 2007 MDX...so maybe i'm a bit spoiled by a nice/luxury car...but geez..the ford minivan was horrible.... i am NOT impressed with american cars. even the Vette.... it may go like stink...but quality is not in the picture.

Ooooh brembo's
Man...thats scary, the Z beating the MR. Then again after reading the article it seemed to have some long straight aways where I am sure the Z pushed the MR, and the 8 with its wankel probably died somewhere. As for the corners

But american crap? That's a pretty stupid comment because the ECOTEC is actually a good engine.

in theory, i'd assume that the SS would take you on a straight, and to no surprise the 8 would own coming outta the apex of just about any turn.
and yea, on the youtube video, it looked like the SS started to pull some and the 8 just let off. I don't think it was quite the blowout that the video seemed to inaccuratly portray.

eh, i think about that, but when i sit inside my 8 after i drive my friends wrx, it's so much more civilized and fun to drive.
thats why i decided to do an LS1 swap after i get into med school :D

Thanks for finding and posting that comparison!
If Mazda decided to go with cheaper interior pieces, maybe to the standard that the colbalt uses, and gone to the 'parts bin'; I wonder how much the RX would cost? Maybe save a grand or so?
Anyways, you see how close these numbers are? I think the track had long straights so the 350Z would just pull from everyone.
