I'm guessing he drives a deluxe model suede Lazy Boy with dual seat warmers, a cup holder, and a back massage vibration thing.

At least we acknowledge that other enthusiast bases are actually car enthusiasts, even if they are misguided, blind, or stupid.

He's not worth wasting time on. He obviously knows nothing about cars so just let him bask in his ignorance.

LOL, I tried finding him on facebook to harrass him, but couldn't find a Mark Zoller in Cinncinati. I googled him also and found a couple but the middle name wasn't J. I was bored at work.

I found him quite easily (not facebook, but other contact info) - I'm not going to share it here because I don't want that info to be used for evil, just for enlightenment. Maybe he had a bad experience with an '04 that blew up on him or something?

I suppose your talking about whitepages.com. Cincinnati, TP has front tree. He has 3 sons to clean it up.

Why does this car provoke such hatred from some people? I realize it won't appeal to everyone, but people often get so NASTY about it...

As a person who has driven both cars and considered buying one of the two of them because they fall into a similar segment of performance + usability, I can say that guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Both the 1 series BMWs and the RX-8 seem to draw out extreme opinions from people in my experience.

Isn't that the "readers' letters" section of the magazine?

There's always a lot of hate in those sections in every magazine out there. Hey, people even say nasty things to the editors of the magazine themselves!!!

So I wouldn't take that letter too personal.

I think part of it is that it depends on how you look at the car. Imagine putting 30k down on a car and releasing that you aren't getting much power and you don't know a lick about how to take a turn or really enjoy the car. You would be pretty angry and feel pretty cheated. The car can be hard to appreciate.

The magnitude of hate is almost irrational in some people towards the car.

Leads me to believe that it's rooted in something deeply personal then, such as, his girlfriend dumped him for a guy with an RX-8, or something like that.

Its a true drivers car, if your someone that just wants to get in a car to go to work and have torque out the *** and not have to worry about maintenance other than changing the oil every 3-5, you would feel that the RX-8 is not the greatest deal.

Everyone hates something, I can probably **** out 3 pages on why I hate GM... And there is someone out there that would defend it with 6 pages worth of ****...

Let them hate. Maybe he got smoked by one and after discovered it was only a 1.3L engine and had to vent or something, who cares... I still love my triangles.

Oh for sure, and I know there are some rivalries out there like Mustang vs. Camaro, but it's this "burns oil and drinks gas" mantra that's become like some sort of talking point with the ignorant, like people just blindly repeat it to bash the car without really having a clue.

I sometimes wonder if the car threatens their sense of reality, like the earth being round (who knew?) did. I mean come on: a four door, four seat, pure sports car without pistons, lol. It's disturbing to some people I think, an impossible anomoly in their tidy little universe they just wish would go away...

My (2009) RX-8 burns little oil. I add some to it occasionally, but it certainly isn't even remotely excessive. I find it funny when people talk about needing to carry around oil in your trunk. I suppose if I were going on a cross-country drive maybe I would (although, it's not like I couldn't stop at a NAPA and pick up some Royal Purple 5W-30 almost anywhere), but when I drove from Lansing to Mid-Ohio and back, I didn't worry about it. I checked it before we left and that was good enough.

I should probably clarify.

My Miata burns a quart of oil every 200 miles.

My 8 burns a quart of oil every 1,500 miles.

When the 8 needs oil, I get it from the Miata's trunk.

Yeah, don't know why there is no much fuss about oil consumption. I read that the Nissan VQ engines use up significant quantities of oil too.

My Miata's engine isn't healthy, hence the oil, but Miata's using 1 quart per 1,000 miles is considered "normal", but it NEVER gets bashed on for oil usage.

Same thing with most Porsches, BMWs, and quite a few other cars like the Nissan's mentioned.

I just don't get the irrational hatred toward oil consumption on the rotary Chances are, the person complaining burns more than we do.

I think it has to do with the fact that in a rotary it's an intentional act whereas in a piston engine it's an incidental act. An engine doing something that it wasn't explicitly designed to do and it's "oh well. there's nothing that could have prevented this" and then quickly forgotten. If it's by design the "gasp! how dare they! Sound the war drums!.
