Really loud metallic thunk/pop/clank noise

This has happened to me 2 times in the past few days when the car is started cold. I let my engine warm up to operating temperature and throw it in gear (has happened in both reverse and 1st gear). A really loud metallic thunking, almost a popping for lack of a better term, noise is heard. Both times I've also received my little muffled thunk after the louder sound that seems to be a typical noise from the DSC. I'm a bit worried about the large thunk noise, however it didn't happen this morning when I took off.

Any ideas what that sound was?

From the sounds of it he's at a complete stop....I know many people relate the sound of shifting into 1st as a bolt action rifle...

stock it's not bad.. but put a RP short shifter in there and it sometimes makes a good clunk.. especially if you don't have the clutch all the way in.

From a standstill. I'm not gunning it either, just an easy acceleration with the RPMs around 1.5-2K, but it happens almost immediately. I'm just curious because I've never heard it before and both times it happened I hear 2 sounds. This mysterious loud bang and the more muffled thunk that I'm used to.

only time I get it is if the car will go into 2nd easily but it won't engage first... ususally you just fiddle with it a bit and then first will engage with a nice thunk. It's rare for me, I've only had my car do it a handful of times.

I used to get the same thing. Apparently the clunk and the thud are normal and went away after a while for me.

Could be the same...?

To clarify, it's not when I'm shifting into the gear that I heard this noise. It is when I had it in gear already and started trying to move the car.

That makes me feel a bit better then . I read through a few threads about loud metallic noises and I thought perhaps it was what I was experiencing but I guess I just had to ask to put myself at ease.

Shinka-Dono: Do you remember around what mileage you were experiencing the sound?

No. But I'm going to devine a number anyway: probably around 10,000 mi. (also it was cold at that time).

Def not shifing noise and it was pretty loud. Shift to 1st. Let the clutch out. Just get moving and "bam", the little gnome living in the engine bay would punch the side of the car.

^ scratch that. It was a little less than 10,000 probably ~7000.

Thanks, I'll not worry about it then unless something really seems amiss. As it is, the car seems to run fine.

Hopefully, the little trolling gnome in the engine bay will gtfo.

Edit: That's closer to the mileage I have right now. I've got about 5600-5700 on my car at the moment.

You are taking up the slack in the driveshaft.. there's a bit of play and if you rolled backwards or somethng sometime it will clunk when the rearend tightens up.
