Is It Really Necessary to Rotate my Tires Every 5k Miles?!!?
Geez, this seems a little excessive. Every time I go to the dealer to have my oil changed they tell me I need to have my tires rotated every 5k miles, which takes my bill from $37 to $70. Seems like a nice little way for them to make money to me.

Watch out for the injector cleaning, brake cleaning, combustion cleaning dealer crap as well
You will get better wear out of the tires if they are rotated that often...but you can also buy a new set with the money they charge you to rotate them that often

Find a dealer with better prices. Where I go, full price for an oil change is $30 (but there's usually a coupon for a lot less) and tire rotation is $20.
If you follow Old Rotor's advice, keep an eye on the back tires to decide when you're halfway.

^..............what about compound as well?
There are too many variables that need to be taken into consideration here for any of us to blatantly just make this call for the OP.
5k is probably excessive, But.....there are a few variables that might actually drop that need down to 5k and not knowing all the info, it's impossible to really tell, other than to make a generic statement(such as I lead off this run-on sentence with).

If I am wrong - ah well. I don't keep any tire past the point where you can physically see wear anyway.

I just had to replace a tire on my R3 (sidewall puncture). It was $260...and that was a GOOD price. Point is, that car wears some pretty expensive shoes and unless money is no object, you're definitely going to want to rotate your tires to extend their life.
I would never pay someone to rotate my tires but, again, if money is no object (or if you don't know how remove and install a wheel), you may decide to. Frequency really comes down to personal preference. Every 5000 miles is "recommended".
Personally, I rotate mine during every other oil change (6000 miles).
