Rebuild - Options??
Hi
If you were going to rebuild an engine, what is the minimum that should be done?
What would be most recommended? (Tranny, Thermostat etc)
What would the ultimate be? Thanks

I personally wouldn't attempt a rebuild myself.
There are many threads about rebuilds.
I'm no expert but I would rather pay someone reputable to do it.
There are a few linked threads in the rebuilders discussion thread discussing options.

- Did the engine fail? If so, how, i.e. what failed?
- Are major components, e.g. plates, housings, and rotors, still w/in spec.?
- Can plates be lapped, ...housings refurbished?
- What w/b the intended use of the rebuilt engine, e.g. daily driver, track, F.I. etc.?
- If F.I., hardening is in order: solid dowels, studs, porting, upgraded injectors
- What's the condition of the water pump, OMP, oil lines & injectors?
These are just initial questions off the top of my head. Answers to these & more... will determine what needs to be done.

You don't really want to rebuild your engine. You trade it for a known-good rebuild from said reputable shop (or Mazda). The risk that any one used engine has parts worn beyond spec is too high.
The ultimate would be to address the main weak points (you also probably don't want to wait for a rebuild to do that).

- Cooling system (hoses, rad, overflow bottle)
- Ignition coils
- Oil injectors test/replace
- Inspect/replace cat as needed
- Inspect/replace motor mounts as needed
- Belts and other consumables as needed
- Clutch as needed
- I wouldn't do real porting, but smoothing the sharp corner in the exhaust port where carbon collects is not a bad idea.
- Porting is a whole other subject, decide that on your own.
- Oil pressure pellet mod to increase oil pressure
- Clean thoroughly all intake valves
- (Obviously) replace all rubbers, seals and bearings. A rebuild from a reputable rotary shop will have done this.
