and the number is?

edit: don't vin #'s include the production date encoded in the vin? also having the vin indicates start of production on that car doesn't it?

Nope, nothing yet. Hopefully we'll get an email from Mazda today or tomorrow with it.

In this case I can forgive spelling "receive" as 'recieve' (weird spelling and upper/case messes w/ my mind, can't help it [esp since I missed that word on 8th gr. spelling test]) - yes, what is the VIN?

After reading this, I immediately called my dealer and had him check again, but no VIN for me yet.

Sent an email to my dealer too. Here's the reply I got:

"Nothing has changed on my inventory sheet. What I can give you is the Vehicle request #, its 200305001459.

At some point probably in May that # will change to a vin #. May is when they are actually going to begin production on the ones we ordered in Jan and Feb. The one you purchased was ordered on Feb 19th.

Hope all is going well."

I guess you could infer that pre-ordered cars are being built right now. My vehicle is dealer allocation.

That is your confirmation number -- not to be confused with your Vin #.

I believe this is a false alarm.

Thanks, I already knew it wasn't the Vin#. I was more interested in the info about when the cars would be built. Hopefully, soon I'll have a vin followed by the actual vehicle.

I have a similar "problem" with my dealer. He gave me 2 such numbers, similar to yours. I also got screwed out of a promo gift by my idiot dealer. His reply "There was only one way for us to place your order" He also used the excuse " All mazda corporate personnel went through a complete revamp/reassignment of duty" and really bad-mouthed Mazda corporate....He also said he wouldn't be surprised if our cars became 2005's. I'm very dissapointed, I just don't know who to be pissed at, Mazda or the dealer for this poor all-around communication.

future RX-8er, maybe.

In cases like these, it's usually the dealer to blame for not following the proper procedures. I highly doubt Mazda corporate just said at the last minute, "let's have a preorder program for the RX-8". A lot of dealers just seem to be set in there ways of doing things so when something new comes along, they are slow to get up to speed on it.

Maybe they should let customers enter their own orders since for the most part we seem to know more than a lot of the dealers do. :p

I totaly second the idea of letting the customer enter their own order. What was the point of doing it online if all it created had to be redone by the dealer, which they appear to have f'd up for a number of people?

My vote is to be pissed at the dealer, for the 2005 statement alone. It's legally impossible for a car delivered this year to be called a 2005 model year. By US law, a specific model year may only be sold across one January 1st date. The typical model year is from September through to the following September, crossing one Jan 1. Early introduction cars happen occasionally, like the 1990 Miata going on sale in May 1989 or so, and again the 1999 Miata going on sale in May 1998. Therefore, the maximum possible life for a model year is 23.9 months (eg a 2004 model could go on sale on January 2, 2003 and be sold until Dec 31, 2004. If the RX-8s delivered in June 2003 were called a 2005 model, it still could not be sold past Dec. 2004. Another example - in Canada, we don't have a 2003 Mazda6. Mazda delayed the on-sale date of the Mazda6 until January 2003, and they're being sold as 2004 models, because they went on sale after January 1, 2003 - they can sell as 2004 models until late 2004 if Mazda chooses! But 2005? That's just stupid!

Regards,
Gordon

No, I think it's worse than that...I think he was trying to say "don't count on getting your car in june or july or anytime soon". Also, he said dealers have stopped taking orders since march, so at a minimum, there looks to be a 3 month lag time. So that puts us at september or later....we'll see what happens. It's a good sign to me that some people are getting vin numbers at least.

Gonna have to agree with the idiot dealer sentiment. My dealer told me that I was the first person who he actually met with to pre-order, although he had a stack of order requests. Somehow I still managed to make it into the SECOND round of orders, while they orderer random cars for the first batch because nobody had contacted them yet!!!!

When I went in January to pre-order, I was the first customer to do so (so he said). And I have not been back since, until this past Friday to see about ordering some accessories.

Of course I am initially greeted by an eager salesperson, and once he finds out I had pre-ordered an RX-8, he escorts me to the owner of the dealership, who in January personally entered my pre-order on his computer while I watched.

Next, the owner remembers me as the 1st person to order an RX-8 from his place, and calls in the Sales Manager to meet me. He has heard my name, since I was the 1st to place an order. The Sales Manager then informs me when my car arrives, they are going to have a photographer present, and basically turn this into a media event.

I say all this just to mention -- there are some very positive dealership experiences, which thankfully I am one of them.
