Hi all,

As it is known our renesis needs to be daily redlined so that carbon deposits get burned. We know many carbon fulled auto RX-8 that they lost compression at a low millage.

However, someone can claim that daily redline of the renesis engine can put it in severe strain resulting in premature wear of apex and side seals and finally decreased compression. Is this true?

Should an RX-8 owner red line his/her car at a daily basis? or this will harm/strain the engine's seals ?

How do you define redlining ? Just revving till red area ? Only this? In every gear?

Rotary's design is different than a piston design, It was designed with High Revving in mind. and the way it moves will not wear things out like a piston engine does.

Revving it in every gear is not possible nor needed. How do you reline it in 6th gear? Its not possible. Any gear is good, 2nd or 3rd. Just drive it on highway, FAST. Thats all

Who has more than 100.000miles + good compression + redlines the car daily?

Are you sure you are not putting enormous wear on the engine by redlining it daily in every gear?

I know renesis needs redlining BUT daily ???? Nobody has heard that if you redline often an engine you wear it enormously ?

 

Daily might be a bit too much to some people, I will say once a week for maybe 5 minutes is still fine.

if you understand how Rotary works, and how the material it use works. and how Law of physic works (fully), you will know its ok to rev a Rotary.

All things wear out. If you push a machine to capacity it should fail sooner than a machine in it normal operating range and the Renesis is no exception.

That said, who cares how many miles your engine lasts if for all those miles you're bored.

Just drive the way it makes you happy and dont worry about how many heartbeats it has left.

BTW, I redline it every day cuz its fun.

MY opinion is that redline is not necessary, it is the wide-open-throttle that cleans out the garbage. High gas flows, high pressure, high EGT, they will keep it clean - just spinning the rotor faster does nothing.

If I was told from a serious and knowledgeable, unquestionable source (eg.: a Mazda rotary engineer or the like) that I should step back on the high-revving and redlining of the 8, I'd sell it on the spot. It's a low-torque engine with very little moving parts where power peaks at 8500RPM so if I can't rev it like hell, thank you very much I'll get another car!

(now of course you have to be intelligent about it... let it warm up and don't cruise along at 8500RPM... you know, common sense)

Moreover, drive it like a granny and you get carbon build up or sticky intake valves, drive it like you stole it and the seals die, come on, how are we supposed to NOT end up with a blown engine? I figure at that point the only wise thing to do is AT LEAST ENJOY IT WHILE YOU CAN, eg.: push the right pedal down, often, hard, so if you ever have to shell out for a new engine it will be for enjoying it too much, not because you babied it and never actually used it like it was meant to be used.

 

my car feels noticeably happier after i give it a good redline run or 10, so that's my anecdotal evidence...

I beat the livin sh*t outta my 1985 rx7 and it ran stronger than some 13b's I drove.

It had 173+ k miles & still ran strong as hell when I had to get rid of it due to body rot / lack of cash.

 

What's the point of driving this car if you don't red line it at least every day..

But I do see a chunk of gas getting sipped every time I do it. It's worth it though..

 

What about clutch wear from frequent redlining?? Gaining a little in one area may hurt in another.......Oh well....life is too short..........enjoy while you can..

 

clutch wear? unless your clutch is slipping, it wouldnt damage it

 

um, redlining the engine is different from clutch dump launch FROM redline...

 

Ok so my thoughts are you dont HAVE to red line it every day... its not required... BUT with that said, it is a drivers car and is fun as hell to drive. Redlining is not bad for the car and as said will help clear any deposits.

I'll usually pin it when getting on an onramp to the highway and redline it in 2nd and 3rd gear (its fun) and gets you up to speed to merge quickly.

Rotary engine is made to rev, it loves to rev. It doesnt have stress points such as a piston engine does (ie connecting rods). The rotary works with itself rather then a piston which works against itself.

What about when you first buy the car. Don't you have to baby it for at least 2000miles. That's what i did with mine.

 

well yea its recommended you do a break in period on anything new. It helps make sure everything is seated properly and any slight imperfections can be gradually worn down rather then cause failure at high heat/load. But once its broken in, hammer down.

 

Ok, i have been here for a while but, what if you can't redline it everyday? My daily drive involves my best place to redline to occur before my warm up period is over. Also, wintery conditions make me feel... uhh, kinda unsafe trying it sometimes. :-( I want to redline more. When I do have my car warmed up on that long road, i gun it in second but can't do it with passengers, they get a afraid.
