Redline during breakin

Hello all. New RX-8 owner (07 Touring, black, 380 miles), and I was hoping to clarify something about the breakin period that I seem to be finding conflicting reports on.

I got the whole 4k rpm, etc etc stuff. But I also always read one should redline the car at least once a day to avoid carbon buildup. Is this true even during the breakin, or only after?

I think first 1000 miles or so keep 4k and under.

PS Congrats on the new car and welcome to the Club.

I never redlined my car during break in. I just varied my rpms thoughout the period. Highest I'd ever rev her would be 6k. Different theories for different people. Now, 66k later, still running like a dream.

Hope this helps. Good luck and welcome to the family.

You do not have to redline but you do need to get it over 6grand to rid yourself of the carbon that may be building during normal stop and go driving. I think you kinda want not to actually red line until you have at least 500 miles on it then do what ever.

Don't redline until you reach the end of the break in period. If you're concerned about the carbon build up, right after the break in I'd say redline it multiple times that day. Maybe even get on a freeway in second and hold it at 8500-9000 for a good 5-8 seconds.

Don't redline during break in.

If you have dreams about carbon building up on your rotors, just remember it's an excuse to drive it harder when you're done with the break in period.

What are you guys considering redline? My redline is 9grand. A 6grand bump should not be a negative.

I don't know what everyone else thinks, but I consider it to be when you hear the beep.

I didn't go over 4.5k for the first 1000 miles. It taught me to appreciate how well the 8 cruses. I was also still learning to drive stick, so I already had plenty of excitement every time I drove.

Break in

I broke my car in via the specs from Racing Beat. I have been getting progressively "quicker" every 5,000 miles or so. By "quicker" the engine feels stronger and more responsive. The link is right off the front page - upper right hand corner: http://www.racingbeat.com/FRmazda4.htm I currently have almost 11,000 miles on mine.

While I doubt anything really bad would happen should you redline it during break-in, I agree—wait 'til you've done 600-1,200 miles (depending on which break-in advice you choose to follow).

A redline a day keeps the mechanic away!

Well since your car is new I doubt there will be much carbon buildup during the first 1k miles anyways. So to be safe I would seriously hold off until 800-1000 mark.

I really appreciate all of the advice from everyone. It was a pleasant way to start my time on the forums

I bought the car with 380 miles on it, from the dealer. Most of those from the dealership staff getting lunch in it, I'm told, hehe. I'm sure it was flogged more than once on those trips, or during a test drive or two, so either way I'm behind the ball. I just wanted to do the best things I can do for the car from this point forward. So, 4-5k for 1000 miles it is. That's fine by me. If I feel the need for a good redline run, I'll make Hepcat let me drive his heh. Or I always have the SRT-4, a good acceleration run is what she does best!
