Repairing Scratched glass?

I bought my rx8 last month, and it was on a rainy day. A couple weeks ago I noticed two hairline scratches on windshield on driver side. Obviously car came that way, and I just didn't notice it. Now that I noticed the scratches, it's all I can look at, and I am slowly dealing with my analness and accepting it, because it is minor. My question is, is there anything you can buy to eliminate window scratches? If I can get these off, or at least mask them it would be great. Anyone know? I thought about complaining to dealer, but it's my own fault for buying a car on a rainy day, and not seeing the marks sooner, and they are not really major. Thanks!!

quote: "I am slowly dealing with my analness and accepting it, because it is minor." Usually I'm unsympathetic to **** types, but I greatly admire your honesty. I feel your pain.

Try your dealer. Though minor, you should not have to accept scratches on a brand new car. They should be able to polish it out carefully without distorting the glass if the scratches are shallow.

And if the dealer wont take care of it , you may be able to polish them out yourself. First drag your fingernail across the scratched area. If you can feel the scratch with your fingernail it is too deep to polish out without creating visual distortion in your windshield. If you dont feel it you can remove it with a glass polishing compound. There are several around. I have used a kit available from Eastwood Company that comes with Rhodite compound and a polishing wheel and it works quite well. Also includes good directions. Follow them explicitly or you can overheat your glass and cause it to stress-shatter. If you aren't into doing it yourself, check out some of the folks in your area who do windshield repair and replacement.

Looks like you got too EXCITED about driving the RX8 the way it was meant to be driven instead of using your rational brain FIRST.

In the same vein, is there anything that can be done about a couple of tiny nicks that a rock made when it flew up and hit my windshield? You can definitely feel and see them, three little dings in a row. I really don't want to have a whole new windshield put in.

That absolutely made no sense at all, and I know that you tried to take a stab at me for my response to your MPG post, so by all means, get it out of your system, but at least make sense for cryin' out loud. That was PATHETIC.

Anyway, It's just one of those things I overlooked when buying the car, but you simply could not see it with water on windshield. In direct sun, is only time it's visible, and it's not like it will pop out at you. I did some research, and only way to get scratches like this out is to either buy a buffing kit and do it yourself (very risky as you could make it worse), or take it to a specalist and shell out about $100 or so to have it totally repaired. I don't mind nicks and scratches, but I at least want to be the guy who causes them. Once car starts getting old and worn, things like this bother you less and less. I'll give it another week, and it if bothers me enough, I'll take it to a glass shop and have it buffed out.

What I meant was that you should have spent your energy scouring every inch of the car, like I did, rather than getting too excited about buying and driving off in the car.

I just think you may be an excitable personality.

Well it was raining, so there's no way you can see scratches this small on windshield, no matter how thoroughly you go over car. I suppose if I had a squeegie, I could have seen it. LOL I was just in an **** mood when I made post and had to vent. I'm over it already. Lots more scratches and dings to follow in years to come, and with the amount of miles I drive, it unavoidable. I got over it as fast as I freaked out about it.

I'm probably just as **** as you are, if not more. At least when i'm not the one to cause damage to my car. I've posted numerous times about dealership scratching up my car. That just drives me absolutely bat ****. Makes me want to go out to their car, key it, look at the damage, and then walk away without a care in the world because it's essentially the same thing that happened to me last time. (My car had dust on it, and I could see where someone noticed the scratch and attempted to wipe it away)

Coincidentally just yesterday I saw a product for scratch repair of reading glasses. That might work for a windshield as well, hm?

Try searching the web, I'll look in my trashcan for the ad when I get home tonight.

I brought my family with me to pick up the car. I told them before hand to look over the car for nicks, dents, scratches, because I knew I would forget in all the excitement. There was a small scratch above the fuel door and a dimple up on the trunck lid. They told me to take the car and enjoy it and come back in January(this was in Dec.) and they'd have it fixed.

While I had it at home in our double garage(two single doors), a spring from the other door broke. It managed to swing over and dent the flare over the right rear wheel, make a swirl mark toward the rear and then finish off with a scratch.

The dealer fixed the original damage but didn't fix the new stuff.
Anybody have any idea the cost to fix a dent, swirl and scratch?

Yes. I noticed some new tiny scratch marks on my car after dealer when I got home. On a black car it's unavoidable to not notice. These kind of scratches you will never see with the other colors. That made the windshield scratches stand out even more to me, but I was mad at myself for that, not dealer. They are ever so slight scratches, but there are those of us who see everything, and those of us who don't. As time passes by, the scratches become acceptable. I too wanted to drive back to dealer and scratch up a few cars myself to get them back. With a color like black, it's just impossible though, and so easy to put even the slightest mark on car, even when detailing it. We all have these scratches, it's just with the other colors, they areso less visible if not invisible to naked eye. You also see road rash as clear as day on a brand new black car as opposed to not seeing it on other colors. I knew going in by buying black I'd be in store for this so I accept it. When clean, it's just such an amazing color, and well worth it.

Apparently with any type of scratch that your fingernail can feel, none of that stuff will work. I searched the web, and odds are I'd be wasting my money if I tried something cheap, other then buying a professional system. If in a month or so it still bothers me, which I highly doubt it will, I'll pay to have it buffed out. No biggie.

yea I was cleaning my window today and notice a very small chip in the glass. My car only has 1100 miles and it sucks because you try so hard to take car of your car but some stupid rock goes and put a chip in your window and makes your drink beer to forget about it!
