replace engine
Anyone had the engine replace under the warrenty. Bought the car new in 2004 and love the car.
Just last week the car died twice at stop lights and then the engine light came on. Lucky the light came on when I was literally one block from the dealership. Drove it there and then the next day they said "it did not hold vacumm" and they were going to replace the engine. Anyone have any advice here?
FYI: I found these two sites on the internet:
http://forums.automotive.com/70/6210...lem/index.html
http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2...recalls_r.html
The 5W-20 versus 5W-30 question. What does everyone else use? I stuck with the 5W-20 - perhaps bad choice?
Well the engine replacement won't cost me a thing - but does it devalue the value of my car?

5w-20 here and the question has been asked and answered hundreds of times on here too (as has the devalue of a new engine). that little search button up there isn't just for looks although it looks pretty snazzy.

I'm running 5W20.
Typical engine failures are related more to carbon build up from a lack of revs. This car, after break-in, needs to be redlined every drive.

They had to replace the engine on my '99 Miata. It actually increased the value of my car a little, as people generally use the number of miles on an engine to determine the mechanical "age" of the car. So… I sold a 12,000 mile car with virtually a brand new engine which, arguably, makes it worth more.
I don't know the answer to the 5W-20 vs 5W-30 question, but I can summarize what most people seem to believe here:
Mazda recommends 5W-30 all over the world, except here, where they recommend 5W-20. The prevailing feeling on this forum is that Ford, who owns Mazda, told Mazda to go with the thinner, more fuel efficient 5W-20 here in order to help bump up fuel economy ratings. (I don't know if that's actually true, but it does seem to be a good explanation for why we're told to use 5W-20 only in N. America.) Some here feel that, while 5W-20 affords you slightly better fuel economy, it does it at the expense of protecting the engine, particularly in hotter climates.
So… reading lots of threads, it seems many feel that, in cooler and temperate climates, at least, 5W-20 is okay. If you live where it gets hot, 5W-30 might be better. Some do 5W-20 in winter, 5W-30 in summer. (Needless to say, there are many opinions about oil: 5W-20 vs. 5W-30, dyno vs. synthetic, to pre-mix or not. Do a search! I'm just giving you the conventional 5W-20 vs. 5W-30 wisdom on this forum which, again, may not even be correct. Though I suspect it is.)

Honda is also going to 5w20. It's all about fuel economy I guess.

oil
My 8 is new but at my next oil change, I will be switching to Royal Purple 5w-20 synthetic. For more on oil, se one of Rotarygod's posts on synthetics. He is a true synthetic oil guru.

I used 5W30 (Mobil 1 or Royal Purple) synthetic oil in both my RX-7s. One was a Turbo and the other was normally aspirated. Both had well over 120,000 on the original motor and they were both running like new when I sold them. The 13B FC RX-7's didn't have any problem running synthetic oil and I was told by a Mobil engineer that the thinnest viscosity synthetic oil that could maintain adequate oil pressure was the proper viscosity for the engine.
5W30 worked great, year round. I suspect that 10W30 would be fine too, just not as good in the cooler months.
BTW, I seldom had to add make up oil until I had 5,000 miles on the oil. Then, I often changed the oil. I usually changed the oil every six months, regardless of mileage. I have gone a year between changes too, but only when I wasn't driving the car much. I have no problem running synthetic oil for 10,000 miles or more between changes when the engine is in regular daily use.

Thanks to all of you that replied. I should of used that "little search button first which I did last night. A lot of good reading and a lot of opinios.
I think I'll try the summer 5W/30 and winter 5W/20. I live in Nashville, TN and this happened when the temp was greater than 90 degrees.
Thanks to all you those in those other posts too!!!

But you should care since you're gonna have to top up the oil between oil changes...Pleeeeeaaaaase tell me you check your oil level about every other fill up...
