snap-on is correct, yes the key works. but a Mazda tech has to reprogrm the keys by deleting the old memmory and reprogramming them using a special Mazda computer tool called a WDS.
It can not be done without it, and no other items are needed just the key set and all the old keys to reprgogram.

Robert, does the button to flip out the key flush in with the remote entry module? The link for the picture of the key showed the button sticking out a little bit from the remote. Wouldn't that be more prone to be triggered in your pocket if it gets tight? Thanks.

You may need to buy bigger pants to solve this problem....try some levi's loose fit jeans.

Problem is if you go to a party where dress code is mandatory. People would wonder what the bulge is :D and some of slax (sp?) has almost no pocket space except for busy hands j/k :D. Anyway it looks like is will be prone to be press if you have alot of stuff in your pocket.

Reminds me of an Alanis Morissette song.....

I've got one hand in my pocket, the other one's given a high-five

N/M, I can't believe I've just admitted to that....

yes the key button does stick out a little bit, I did try to push the button and the key does come out. it only came out a little though and I had to push the buton fairly hard I dont think it would just press if it rubbed against something, I tried dropping from a little and it did not open.

managed to place an order with a Canadian dealership. they didn't mention if there was a shortage of the key, but it took them about 4 days to find the parts - even after i gave them the part numbers i got from this thread...

transmitter: $186
key blank: $42
(approx. Canadian prices)

can't wait ... just hope it doesn't take forever to arrive.

Ordered the parts from Malone at Trussville. My local dealer in Portland, OR see n problem with getting the new key and the old ones reprogrammed and seems quite clear on the whole WDS thing. I will keep my fingers crossed.
Thanks to Ibfubar2000 for the input

Not 100% true. If you have at least two previously programmed keys, you can do the programming yourself & do not need WDS.

Goes like this-

1 Insert one of your original keys & turn ignition to on position, wait for the security "key" icon light to come on & then go out. Remove key & insert next key within 4 seconds of "key" icon light going out.

2 Repeat step above with next original key, & any additional previously programmed keys.

3 Insert new unprogrammed key in ignition & turn to on position. Wait for the security "key" icon light to come on & then go out.

4 Finished!

doesn't work with the 05 key on the 04 cars...that is for extra 04 keys or the special rotary key

Cool. But if the 05 key can be self-programmed using the normal procedure, it's strange that both Trussville and Rosenthal couldn't figure this out.

My 2004 has 3 original keys. I added the new 2005 retractable key using the programming procedure I outlined earlier. This is for the key programming to enable engine starting, not the programming for the keyless entry. That is a different procedure which also worked fine.

You will need to use WDS if you happen to have only one programmed key, or the dealer has gone into your system & disabled the spare key function. (Not likely)

I'll post both procedures I used (Key registration / keyless entry transmitter programming) from the manual on this thread Thursday afternoon. Don't waste your money, do it yourself if you have two good keys!

Sounds great if you can do it yourself. I dont know if it will work or not. For those of you that ordered i still have not heard anythng yet on the status, sorry. Hopefully soon. we are moving the dealer this weekend so the parts guys are real busy packing and moving everythng but I do keep asking them, they will let me know as soon as it arrives.
