Rev buzzer - can't hear it or doesn't have one ...
Hi everyone:
Either I'm deaf as a post (which, actually, I am), and can't hear it, or my car doesn't have a rev buzzer.
Mine is broken in now (about 1800 miles), and at full throttle, have gone right through to about 9500 RPM and have heard nothing.
My old RX-7 had a loud buzz tone that you could easily hear above the engine noise. But I'm 20 years older and more deaf now (old rock guitarist here) and don't hear high tones very well.
Can anyone give me a clue as to what it sounds like? Is it a contant high tone? Any idea of the frequency?
My car has a September 2003 build date, by the way.
Stew

1500 miles here...noticed the buzzer right after the break in period when I first unleashed the beast but went and pushed the redline last night and noticed no sound at all
from what I remember (granted I've heard it once) it was a fast chime right after hitting 8500rpms

Constant High Pitched tone. Starts when needle hits 8,500. If you have the radio on, the AC on 3 or higher, or the windows down you might not hear it (I'm also a bit deaf and can't hear it under these circumstances). I'd swear that just after break in my 8 didn't have the buzzer...but it works now.

^^^^ I'm having the exact opposite problem....I know I heard it just after the break in period but now I cant seem to get it to ding no matter how hard I try
MTCD >> have you done anything to your 8 since the break in that may have turned the chime back on?
BTW...what part of NOVA are you in? Fairfax here.

I'm right next door to you in Loudoun County.
My car is bone stock and the only difference between when I didn't hear it and now is the "M" flash (which shouldn't have anything to do with it). The only reasonable explanation I can think of, for why I didn't hear it before, was that my ear wasn't tuned in to all the sounds of WOT from the rotary and I missed it (I used to be a car stero guy - did many instalations and spent hundreds of hours exposed to db levels equivelent of jet take offs in my own car on long trips - ringing from a three hour drive lasted about two days). I really would rather have a nice bright shift light than the almost inaudible (phantom - to me anyway) beep. You could check the fuses (I doubt it's a fuse though). Maybe run it by the dealer as a last option.
There is a MSCW meet this wednesday in Tysons (by Fudruckers sp). Several 8s are usually there. I may be there. Someone might know something about it.

I have the same problem of not hearing the buzzer, and coincidentally have a 9/03 build date. However, reading from above that it sounds kind of like the radio beep, I realized that I turned off my "beep" for the radio, maybe the two are related? It would be incredibly stupid to tie the two together, and I can see no reason why Mazda would do that...but I'm going to turn on the beep and try redlining it on the way home tonight, traffic permitting. I've taken it up to 9500 myself, with no sound whatsoever. Radio was on though, and windows down. May have missed it, though my hearing is fine.

It's very easy to miss. I generally don't hear it unless I specifically listen for it.
Now that someone mentioned it, it DOES kinda sound like the radio BEEP tone, only constant.
I glance at the tach instead, since you know when it points straight up, it's time to start thinking about the next gear. I find that LESS distracting than wondering if I hear the tone or not...

Go to Taka's website: http://www.step-hen.com/e_rx8clips.htm and scroll down to this video: Laguna Seca Time attack
You will hear several chimes
oops - looks like Taka wants $10 to view these now

HeelnToe is right- it's VERY easy to miss. Kinda sounds like a quiet NEEEEEEEEEEEEP! and if you have anything else going on- the radio, the window or sunroof open, people talking- you'll miss it.

Thanks everyone that replied. I'm guessing that it's in that range of hearing that my Marshall stack and Stratocaster took from me about 20 years ago. In my right ear, I hear nothing at all above 2500 hz, and my right ear has a depression in the hearing curve (as in the sounds sound more faint than other frequencies) from about 4000 hertz on up, and all disappears around 12,000.
If it's the same tone as the radio beep, then I'll never hear it at all - I can't hear that either and it drives my wife bats, so we just shut it off.
My 85 RX-7's rev tone sounded like a cheap alarm clock ... BUZZZZZZZZZ! No missing that!
