Question Reverse impossible in the cold!!??!!??

The last week it has gotten really cold here, besides the constant tire underinflation light (due to the cold) I am now finding it almost impossible to get her into reverse-even when I warm her up for 10 or 15 minutes first!!! ANYONE ELSE HAVING THIS PROBLEM?????

It has gotten a little cold here hasn't it

I had to put an extra 5 lbs. of air in each tire a few days ago -- was also getting the tire warning light -- now no problem -- I think the light comes on when pressure is under about 30 lbs.

No issues getting into reverse -- I would get it checked out ASAP -- I might suggest going to Olsen since Regan closed -- not sure what kind of tech staff Woodhouse has in place. Olsen has a very good rotary expert (Jeff) who has been there a long time (he used to work on my first gen RX-7).

That's comforting, compared to my experiences with their nissan/hyandui dealership. Hopefully I can give the borla a listen next week as well.

Kain - even when you cycle through other gears and then try to go into reverse? Kind of weird that it's just reverse. Any other shifting/gear crunching problems?

Probably me by 168th & Q but there is another Titanium 8 that I see out in that area (no appearance pkg) -- my church is building a new building at 180th & Q and I am on the building committee.

Hope your daughter is OK -- sorry we missed each other.

Love my Borla! :D Installed it myself -- not a big problem.

Gonna drive my 8 this winter -- just got my wheels/tires from tirerack.com. 17" Dunlap Wintersport M3 runflats with Fox sport 2 wheels. I will put them on in a week or two when it starts snowing.

Let me know when you have time to get together.

I am the tit grey without the appearance package and I took the 8 into olsen and they are getting me a new part for my oil light problem (at high speed) but said they cannot duplicate the reverse problem It has not been cold at all since I got it in there (of course) so I will have to wait to see if it does it again when the cold resumes around here.. but yes- the other gears would cycle through just fine- then when I got to reverse no go! I actually had to push it out last friday when I left work. RXHusker- could you pm me with the price you got on that winter tire setup? and what are you going to do about the air sensors on the tires?? does these new rims allow for these or are you gonna let em' hang?? and later this week we should get together for lunch since the cold has seem to left us momentarily gotta get my 8 back forst-hopefully today- OH and unfortunately SO was outta loaner cars so I have been set up with a dodge neon very uncool

this works for me whenever i have any problems in any manual car. If it is reverse you are having trouble with then get the shifter as close as you can to were it is suppose to be without forcing it. while the car is running keep the shifter in that location and slowly bring the clutch away from the floor. Do this too fast and you will grind gears. do it just right and you will get it into reverse. another thing that works for me is to put it into a forward gear roll the car forward a hair and then put it into reverse. 99.9 times out of 100 this works for me.

The way I understand it is that in general, they don't put synchros on your reverse gear. Pushing it into your favorite forward gear before selecting reverse usually works to prevent those embarassing grinds and should fix the blocking problem too.

If not, try rolling it slightly first.

well it is cold again - and when I took my car in a couple of weeks ago they said they could not duplicate the problem. Well now the problem has returned- I have been backing into my driveway to avoid the cold-start reverse. Well this morning I could not even get it into first! I had even let the car warm up for a good 15 to 20 minutes- had to roll the car to finally get it into first!! Got to work and it is still not going into reverse? I appreciate the comments/ideas of rolling it- but this is a brand new car and I should be able to shift in the mornings with the amount of warm up preperations I made. Anyhow, it is suppsoed to start getting warmer again tomorrow so I doubt ti will happen again- will have to wait till I see it is going to be cold- then I will drop it off at the dealer and see what they think in the morning (when it is cold) I am JUST REALLY WORRY I am going to drop the thing before that happens. ALSO, it was cold here the last two days 10 to 30 F. and in reality that is not that cold for the region- what happens when it gets really really cold??????

Kain -- that must be very frustrating! I would take it back to the dealer and demand they replace the pressure plates and bolts -- there have been enough reports of problems with those parts that Mazda must have a record in their service bulletins.

I took mine in for first scheduled maint last week and oil pan replacement. I asked about your car and Angie said that they couldn't duplicate the problem. There was actually another Titanium GT in the shop that was just recently sold that was having the clutch replaced already -- you may have a similar problem that just isn't as bad yet.

I had a Datsun 510 that would give me problems into reverse. Turned out to be a leaking transmission front seal. Coated the flywheel with transmission oil, and the clutch plate was sticking to it, so only gears with syncro could be had. Guess I didn't get it out on the highway (it was very new at the time) or it probably would have slipped in 4th gear.

yeah - sounds like a mechanical flaw or glitch - not like something you're just meant to put up with - I'd recommend doing exactly what you're doing - take it in and make sure you are clear about wanting it fixed under warranty.

It was -10 degrees here yesterday, car still runs like a champ. Only problem is the tire pressure monitor thing being on all the time.

When it happens call the Mazda service number and have it picked up and delivered to the dealer. Have them deliver a loaner so you can go to work. Put the pressure on Mazda not the dealer. You have road side assistance use it. I bet it will no take more then one process to get this resolved.
