we had a post about this like 6 months ago and i believe the conclusion was to not rev it before shutting down because it opens up another valve after like 3200 rpms or something, i don't remember. But they said it just released excess gas.

 

If the AFR indicates 20:1 lean, it means there's no fuel present.

 

I think so. So you're saying that one should NOT rev the engine on shutdown at all, yes? Sorry to be dense, but I want to be sure.

Oh, yikes. Sorry about that. I was just referring to the smilies to make it simple. I would recommend the method with the least amount of fuel left in your chambers before shut off: <-- that would be rev a bit and let the rpm drop a few before turning it off. This way, fuel is off while the rotors are still spinning. Any fuel remaining would be expelled before total shutdown.

 

does anyone know exactly what the new flash does so that we don't have to rev anymore? just curious.

 

Can anyone tell me on which page of the User Manual that talks about the rev to 3k before shutdown? I flipped through the whole book and would not find it. Only see the How-to-start-the-Flooded-Engine page, but it never mentioned about rev-to-3k before shutdown, and that page is obviously glued onto it later, covering some old instructions underneath. Make me so wonder what it was printed originally.

And when I bought my car from the dealer, the sales did not mention anything about rev-it-before-shut-it neither?!

 

I never saw it anywhere in the book either. The sales guy at the dealership asked me to do it when I did test drives of *their* cars; they never said anything about it when I finally purchased mine. But since the guy who told me to do it was their RX-8 expert, he'd had special training and actually drives one himself, I figured I'd better do it. Only with this thread am I starting to reconsider.

as long as the temp. gauge is in the normal operating range you will be fine , not having to rev up the 8

This is evidence that short moves in the RX8 can still flood regardless of flash status. As mentioned repeatedly, if your engine temp is up, then no rev is necessary. If you are making a short move out of the garage to take out your lawnmower, by all means REV! It won't kill you.

 

So wait. Now I'm confused.

You're saying it's *ok* to do short moves if you do the rev thing? I thought one had to warm up the engine regardless...

Krankor, I am saying that if you MUST absolutely, positively, life or death, heaven or hell, wife-will-make-you-sleep-in-the-doghouse, have to move short distances, then at least do the rev procedure instead of shutting the engine off straight away. Xyntax gave a great explaination on how and why, so I won't repeat him.

Alternatively, you could take the 8 out for a spin around the neighborhood to allow the engine to warm up.

 

This is more fun too! Highly recommended

 

Ha ha .. I can see thousands of guys saying to the wife "Uhhh I'm going to mow the lawn, but I don't wanna flood the 8 so ... uhhh .... I'm going to warm up the engine. Bye!". The ladies don't see their husbands for another 3 hours. Ha ha.
