"Ringing" sound at 8K RPMs
I was driving my car the other day, and I was in 2nd gear, and had it up to 8000 RPMs...then I heard a sound I've never heard before...it was almost like a bell ringing, or someone banging on a triangle (the instrument, like in a High School band).
I also heard the sound in 1st and 3rd gears. It was louder in 2nd and 3rd gear then it was in 1st.
Anyone know what this is?

The rotary is so smooth at high RPMs that it is possible one might not notice that they are approaching redline. In order to prevent people from bouncing it off the rev limiter all the time, Mazda put installed a buzzer to go off at 8500 RPM to give a warning of the approaching redline.
I am pretty sure that is what you are hearing.

Can you hear it in 4th, 5th or 6th gears as well?
LOL :D JK Don't...you better stick around here for a while & learn more about your car first.

jeez guys, take it easy on him...
yes, from what you're describing it's the Redline Buzzer (well, it used to be a buzzer in older rotaries, and is now more like an electronic chime), and it's to remind you to upshift.

No, it is NOT a buzzer. Did you guys not read the part where I said it SOUNDS LIKE A TRIANGLE?...Like in your high school band?
To be more "precise" about the sound, its like when you bang
two pieces of hollow stainless steel together...or maybe bell at a hotel front desk.
I've approached redline, and I've heard the buzzer/beep.
Like I said it happens at 8K rpms, way before 8.5's and 9K.
...and also as I said, it seems louder in 2nd and 3rd then
it was in first.
Why dont you guys read the ENTIRE POST before making fun of a person?

Even though I was not in my high school band, I believe I may help you. Do not listen to the other folks around here. They are just messing with you.
The RX8 is filled with rotary triangular cues, and you my friend have found the last one!
You are the first to correctly identify the sound as "a triangle." It is, however, not the sound of a bell at a hotel front desk. Just to be sure, it is the sound when you bang two pieces of SOLID TITANIUM RODS together.
Mazda painstakingly engineered the sound to be not like any ol' triangle sound but specifically the sound that a HIGH SCHOOL BAND triangle makes. Mazda is very, very particular. If I may be presumptuous, you seem so as well, and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if you are actually a triangle prodigy, what with your acute discernment.
What is the sound REALLY for? It's to urge you to step on the gas pedal, man! The redline zone on the tach is the warm-up zone. There is actually a virtual tach that extends WAY past 8500 rpm. Visualize it and then shoot for the stars!
Remember how rowdy you guys were back in high school band, how you guys took everything to the limit and beyond, how you took incredible risks and dared to do the undoable?! No guts, no glory. Shoot for the stars, man!!!

What about for developing a humanistic-existential life philosophy that is not just deflectory but also self-effacing, that helps stave off cardiovascular disease even in Type A personalities?
What about in maintaining relations in the work environment just long enough so all attention may turn to the domineering, self-appointed leader?
What about in keeping that girl close enough to you despite your flaws so that she may become your steady and eventually your wife?
Sarcasm or humor? Only a weapon?

Doh! I figured this was meant to be funny. Darn!
I don't know what my "buzzer" sounds like in 1st gear...it happens too darn quick. I don't give it much time in the other gears either, but like Wakeech said, it's a lot like a chime, or when you bang two hollow cylindrical zirconium rods together.
If you're sure it's not that, go get it checked-out. Now!

In the end, in 20 years or so, while looking back on your time with the RX8, no one's going to give a donkey's *** if it was a buzz or a triangle sound or a fart.
But RIGHT NOW, Bonnzilla cares. It matters to him. And if it matters to him, then it matters to me.

I hear it too on my A/T. It's faint. It's not the striped zone chime. It's almost like the sound of the intake charge reverberating in the intakemanifold.
I wouldn't worry about it too much seeing that we all know the rotary can rev far higher than 9K RPM.

You guys should hear the weird noise old Turbo IIs make at WOT at a certain RPM in a certain gear. Sounds like it's squeaking or something.
Anyway, either it's detonation, or those ports. When I stuck my friend's autozone filter on my parents' Accord V6, it always makes a strange whisling sound at exactly 2500 rpm. Apparently, it was the reasonant tuning design of the intake manifold, and since rotaries respond well to resonance tuning, that could be it.

I had a similar problem with a Honda Accord once. It only happened at certain speeds. It turned out to be a gap in the front windshield sealing. The air flowing through resonated like the ringing sound you get rubbing your finger around the rim of a crystal wine glass.
Ours was speed not RPM specific so I don't know if its relevant. Good luck tracking it down.
