Rite of Passage: 1st Ticket

Well, it only took 6 weeks. Got a speeding ticket today heading home for lunch. Came around a corner on RT 6 to find a state trooper on the outside shoulder - caught me doing 83 in a 50

Thankfully, the ticket was marked down to 60 in a 50. $85 instead of $350!! Not that I'll be paying anything other than court costs. RI has a 'good driver' policy and my last ticket was over 3 years ago, so I can have the fee waived (by wasting a day in court).

I'm just glad that Johnny Law didn't bust my ***** about the 15% tint (illegal in RI) that I had done 5 days ago. He also ignore (or maybe didn't notice) the lack of front plate.

Maybe next time . . .

I heard cops will give out more warnings to non-sports cars than sports cars.

wonder why? (yeah right)

Thats just flat out weak. Dress up a ***** in a civil service uniform and you've got just the type to give a ticket for 10 over. There is no need for that ****.

I guess it makes me feel a little better. I know I earned mine. I probably would have ended up with more serious charges in your situation.

That's really wrong if true.

A normal sub-compact or SUV can't handle the speed very well, nor stop quickly.

Try telling the average regulator that.

Don't you know speed kills?

We're also suffering from revenue raising speed camera profusion while things that would actually save lives like proper road maintenance and upgrades are ignored.

Of course if you pass a cop going 150, he's likely to take notice even without his radar gun on... :P

About a ten months ago I got a speeding ticket for doing 33 over also. He gave me and my brother each tickets for 350 and 6 points. But we brought it down to 128 and 4 points in court. Sadly I did not have my radar with me (it was a cop in a blue tahoe with a crapload of hp) and he hit the brakes, kept going, then my brother( the idiot) passed me doing 100 and he slammed on the brakes and flipped around and got us both. Sad day..June 22nd 2005...

Got my first ticket in the 8 (first in 6 or 7 years) about a month ago. I was furious. Turns out it was a bogus ticket, but I paid it anyway. It was at night and there were only two cars on the road, me and a cadillac. The caddy was in front of me and gaining distance as we entered town. In other words, I was going WAY slower than he/she was. The cop was hiding way off of the right side of the road and pulled me over instead. Told me he clocked me at 60 in a 45. I was going 60 when I passed the 55 mph sign, so giving me a ticket for 5 over...understandable. Turns out if he had a regular radar detector, he had absolutely no clue what speed I was actually going since he would have clocked me directly down the side of my car, not from the front. Gave me the ticket for 55 in a 45 to give me a break...jerk.

Profiling? You decide.

I got my ticket not because of speeding , but because of Fat cops sitting there and wait for people to go stop sign.

the problem is I did stop at the stop sign, but those fuxking cops probably just pick on me because I have a Sport car(the car right in front of me just went right pass, but those cops didnt get him, but instead, I stop and go and they picked me)

there you go, 2 points off my record, and this **** will stay with me for like what, 18 months on DMV and insurance for 3-5 years ?

I just hope Dunken Donuts put extra sugar to their Donuts, and these fuxking cops will die sooner cuz they eat too much (I swear I saw the very same patch number car stopped at the dunken donuts around my house everyday !)

yeah but if he doesn't have his radar gun on then he can't prove you were going 150 and can't give you a ticket.

does anyone know if those things keep an internal record of each speed they measure?

WRONG the doppler frequency shift of the RADAR(radio detection and RANGING) is designed to measure velocity so as the "waves" bounce off of your car it measures the diff. between the waves and a computer calibrates your speed. So the only way to be accurate with that is to be headding directly toward or away from the source of the emission and as you move farther toward 90deg away from that you become more ambiguous. Yes a ticket for 5 over is BS, but your comprehension of the situation is obviously skewed.
Just trying to help. I do not want anyone on this board to say wrong information and get called out on it.

1.) K, Ka, X, and SuperX band radar can't distinguish which car is which in traffic, so if there is more than one car in the area or a group of cars the cop dosen't know which car is traveling at what speed. So if he singles you out of a group of cars and marks that he was using radar, there is no guarentee that the speed listed was the speed your car was going and makes it innacurate.

2.) Radar speed detectors cannot operate with the system perpendicular to traffic. So if you see the side of his car, he's using laser (window rolled down) or he isn't doing anything. If he pulls you over and his car was perpendicular to you, and he writes down he was using radar, you can fight it. If he's using laser, your screwed. If he was using laser and you saw that his window was rolled up, then you might have a chance because laser won't work through glass, or rain and fog for that matter too.

3.)If he says he was using POP radar, which is a Ka band that's "spurted" out at high power. It's supposed to be for checking speed while not giving the radar away to a detector until it's too late. He can't pull you over for POP. Because of the innaccuracy of the system. If you were to read a POP radar manual it would say something like, "Not to be used for enforcing traffic laws, just for survey only." Most states don't even use POP for this reason.

Pardon? If he has a radar gun in his hands, what difference does the direction his car is facing make? I've seen these guns up close, and they don't even need a car to operate. Could you please explain?

Is this POP the same thing as "instant on"?

The one in his hands is a laser more than likely. I have never seen a hand-help radar gun. I've sat in cop cars and the electronics are bulky. I can't disclaim that there might be a hand-held radar, but I've never seen it. They are always mounted to the front and/or rear of the vehicle and they look like square boxes with a dome on the business end of it. If he's aiming it a device at you like it's a gun, then it's a laser and not radar.

Yeah pop is the same as instant on.

True. But they can be mounted on pivot arms, so the cruiser can have it's fat *** towards you, but the radar swung backwards facing traffic.

That might be the case, but it's very hard to prove in court that the cop singled you out. Unless you have witnesses from the same group of cars traveling with you, it's your word against the cop's and we all know who wins in such situations.

If he was using laser and you saw that his window was rolled up, then you might have a chance because laser won't work through glass, or rain and fog for that matter too.
Again, this is something you'd have to prove (probably with a witness, the more the better).
