Road & Track 12 Best
#51
I thought interesting that although the MS3 was on the "Best Enthusiast Cars for Under $30K" list, the very next thing they had a full road test of the MS3, which I must say, wasn't the most flatering review of a sporty car I've ever seen.
As in: mentions of torque steer, overall noise, rubbery non-linear shifter, "only decent'" handling, "not a very good track car", "not quite sports car precise steering", understeer, and brake fade. Great enthusiast car, eh?
I wonder if the two story editors ever compared notes? Or were the 12 Best editors even on the payroll when the RX-8 was tested? Or maybe they've simply never heard of it. Personally I think the 12 best people wanted to be 'Trendy Cool', and picked the current "under 30 yr old" darlings, I mean really, good though they may be, the Cobolt, Mustang GT, Solstice GXP, Scion tC, etc., for example, have plently of their own warts.
Three Mazdas would certainly NOT made the other car advertisers happy, and wouldn't make a good story for the readers whos passion don't include Mazdas.

Mazda hasn't done anything to improve the car and for that reason maybe it doesn't deserve to make the list <shrugs>

I thought this article was really stupid. Under $30,000 means... under $30,000. Not that the 350z starts at $29k if you basically want an engine and 4 wheels. I don't consider that under $30k because, if you pay that price, you'll walk out over $30k with tax, title, and all that other **** the dealers tack on. i'm pretty tired of car mags exalting the ever so great 350z. Yes, we know it's a "muscle car that handles" yada yada yada but come on, some of us want to read about some different cars for a change. Where was the RX8, which you can get easily for under $30K fully loaded? Or the Acura TSX? Chevy Malibu SS? If they're gonna test a tC, put it against a Tiburon at least... same price bracket and target demographic. The new Eclipse wasn't there either. And what about the Mazdaspeed6?
Yeah, not all I just listed are my favorite cars, nor are some even particulary good cars. But they're all sporty and are thousands, not hundreds, under $30k. They've written about the 350z and Mini Cooper and Mustang enough. I'm sick of it. We KNOW the Z is a good car, try writing about stuff that really is under $30k if that's what you set out to do. It's stupid to take cars that usually retail well above the $30k mark and put them against cars with half the price and half the horsepower.
