Question Rotary & Run-in

Does anyone know about how many miles the RX-8 has to run-in as for warm up for the RENESIS engine In order to keep our car's engine more smooth and longer life, we have to process the first step.........RUN-IN:D I did run-in on my Civic about 3000 miles.

Anyone agree with my thought?

Probably about 1000 miles for a good break-in. Keep it around 3-4k RPMs when you shift, maybe 5 since it redlines at 9 :P

I believe the first service is 600 miles, but I've heard people suggest that you take it easy for the first 3000 miles... especially if you want to keep the car for a long time and want to be absolutely sure.

Heh... I'm gonna find somwhere that's 300 miles away, collect the car in the morning.... I wonder if the dealer would be confused if I booked the first service for the the next day?

Of course, you should take the back roads because you probably want to run in over a range of different speeds and engine rev's rather than just cruising up a freeway.... At least that's what I understood... anyone have any comment on that?

one more question, my friend's 86's 2nd RX-7 (NA) that the RPMs will rise up about 3000 rpms as soon as the engine stars, and then the rpms drap down quickly to 1000 rpms after 30 seconds. why? i don't see this happen in the piston engine's cars. Is every Rotary engine is like that

Lots of cars do that regardless of engine design, although usually not cars that old. Part of the quick warm-up cycle for improved emissions (catalytic converters don't work until they're warm).

It will be interesting to see what the recommended run-in period is. I wanted to take a test drive as soon as I could but how much could the test drive tell us if we aren't even supposed to hit the torque or the horsepower peak?

Test drive the one on the lot; order the one for your garage

I don't want to trash someones future car I don't think Mazda will let people buy the rx-8 using the s-plan until much later in the year (if at all). If any of you are buying straight from the lot, look at the amount of test drive miles the car has.

Hi Patrick,

I knew you were kidding :D but you did bring up a valid issue. Most cars don't need to be above 7000 rpm to feel the peak torque.

I can't foresee people test-driving the rx-8 without going up in the revs a bit. The engine is made to rev and will be geared to rev high.

Can the dealers afford to keep 1 rx-8 for everyone to test drive?

Can Mazda run the engine in a little so that it wouldn't have too much of a break in period?

service after 600 miles? What is this service that is done at a dealer ship do you have to get it serviced by them or is it something u can do at your own time. I've never bought a car from a dealership.

You need to get it done by them, so they can stamp your book ... otherwise your car doesn't have a "service history"...

Oh, Err... I take it you've not owned many cars.... or never bought anything with less than mabe 50,000 miles on or mabe it's different in your country!!!

If I assumed it was the same everywhere, you get a service book with the car... saying what the service schedule is... and you get it stamped by a dealer or other authorised place when they do the service... that way when you come to sell it you have evidence that it's been cared for at least to the manufacturer's specs..

I don't know what the service schedule is, but I may well do an additional oil change myself in between... I doubt that the first service at 600 or 1000 miles will cost much ..... it's just an inspection to make sure the factory bolted it together right and to change the oil and filter since they will be contaminated by the debris you are trying to get rid of by running the car in.

PS, I never bought a new car either... but my Honda had full dealer service stamped in the book until I bought it at 138,000 miles... Woah! That car was imaculate... and it was still going strong when I sold it at 175,000... no rust, good interior and it still shined when you cleaned it... these Jap's know how to screw a car together!

your right. I've only had one car So far and Thats my 89 honda accord. Ya My honda has about 160k miles on it. I've been changing oil my self. Changed a new water pump this summer. New cv joints. It still gots some problems I don't know what to figure out. Recently my flexpipe i think its called or i think some people call it the downpipe. Its the pipe that steel braided infront of teh catltyc converter i think. THats rusted off I will be replacing that as soon as i can use this autoshops lift . Hrrm It was wierd When i first got my car it ate oil the oil really bad i had to refill every 400-500 miles. But i changed teh oil and it seems ok. It idles low . Anyone got an idea on the problem? And something messed when the gears change. It really kicks when the gears chagne. I bought it from my aunt. So I don't know anything of this servicing. For those who will modify their cars. ie:exhaust intake, porting etc what evver else goes on with modding a ratary will those people still beable to get their car serviced at the dealership?. I plan on keeping the car stock for long time. But Just my wonders I will probably want to upgrade later on.
Any help with my car I'd really apreciate it and thank you very much.

If Mazda would invite us out to a track day at Laguna Seca we wouldn't have to worry about romping on someone elses car. If they are worried about the cars getting (maybe 3 or 4 total) trashed only invite people with a deposit and are prequalified to buy then if needed they can enforce the break it you buy it policy. There are very many skeptics out there that won't buy without having driven a vehicle and we all know dealers are sketchy about test drives on higher end cars so a nice little weekend with a few rotor heads and some press to take opinions and start a little buzz about "how great this car is", (by someone not essentially employed by the auto makers) than I can't think of any better way to market a sports car, can you?

Don't know... mine was manual and when I buy old cars I buy ones that have no problems or I get ALL the problmes fixed on day one so that things I have to fix happen 1 at a time!

As for if they can get serviced at a dealership... I think so,, most of these services are only changing the oil, plugs filter, break pads etc... it's a shame to have to do that at a dealer, but a car with a service history is worth more to sell....

Of course mods will void your warantee... so that could be a problem.. .

Sell? Pshaw! :p

I hope to keep my MKI MR2 forever. I've grown pretty attached to it. If I do end up buying an RX-8 and it steals my heart, well, then I'd have to keep it too.

Here in the colonies, it is completely done on the dealer's 'puter. Initially, it was done on their own systems, until they created a national network. The book hasn't been stamped by too many of them for some time now.
