Rx-8 Automatic

Alot of people on this forum ask about

How Automatic RX-8 is fast or not ?
If it is worth buying a Auto RX-8 ?

I am 16, i am looking into buying a rx-8 auto... yeah auto...
It really is fast... its pretty fast... faster than a v6 6 auto.
The car is underrated in auto form... and i felt it would be slow... since alot of people on this forum say the auto is slow... NO ITS NOT.... IT IS ONE NICE car... auto or manual...

So dont feel that auto is slow... cause its not... pulls pretty nicely ... and i had 2 people with me ... imagine only me in the car. I didn't even redline...and it was quick. it is really really nice...

I drive a 2000 Volvo C70 Turbo... 0-60 in 6.4... so back to back i drove them... and rx-8 seems like a turbo from 4K and up... man it so sweet...pulls so nicely ... (parents wont let me get a stick... and i dont even care anymore ... cause the auto was off the chain!!!...

I'm also 16 and test drove an Rx-8.
I drive an 86 BMW 5 series and the auto 8 was much quicker 0-60 and much nicer around turns (as it should be.)
I hope to get an auto 8 in winning blue for Christmas but I suppose its up to pops... finals went bad!

The Rx8 in automatic is not very fast. There are many auto V6 cars out there that are faster youare incorrect like the G35 and 350Z. Sinceyou guys are only 16 I dont think you have driven enough cars to get a goodgrip of what fast really is. 16 yearolds getting RX8s?? Ay ya yi! Having an RX8 as your first car isa scary thought to me. This is not the kind of car youwant to scratch up.

I agree, 16 year olds getting an rx-8's doesnt sound like a good idea. But if mom's and pop's got the money, then so be it. However the auto rx-8 is not a bad car, if you like to race and drive your rx-8 recklessly then get the manual, if you just want a nice ride and still be able to do whatever it is everyone does while driving then I suggest getting the auto. And no, driving stick and talking on the cell at the same time is not safe, even if you have driven stick all your life. Anyways the auto is fast enough for any normal driver, guess it just depends on your perference.

Jerky: I agree with the flying saucer thing =) it's awesome!

Going from a Civic to a RX-8 Auto is a big jump regardless.

I have an Auto. I agree, it's no where near as quick as the M/T. However, it still out-handles most other cars out there, and it's a lot easier to work a girl up driving an A/T as to an M/T because you can only shift one thing at a time...

Take what you can get though.

I have driven fast cars...
Toyota Supra TT (0-60 4.9)
Volvo C70 (0-60 6.4).. i drive right now
Infiniti G35 (0-60 6.1) ...

Thats fast to me... i know most of you have driven insane fast cars.. but the point is the automatic isn't too bad... it quick and alot of people underrate it. I know the manual is crazy fast... like from freeway start... not standstill.

I test drove the auto and it's not fast. I wouldn't call it slow, but it's NOT fast either. All performance is relative, but the RX-8 Auto isn't "fast" relative to anyhting else in it's price range. It's acutally slower than just about any car in it's price range. The 6MT is much faster. I can't believe it only has a 4 speed also, with much cheaper less sporty cars coming with 5 speed automatics now.

Your S70 would run pretty even with a 6MT RX-8. It would smoke an auto.

But, truth is, you're not going to be going to the track or racing it (hopefully). It's still a great car and handles great, and I like the shift buttons and paddles on the steering wheel. You'll enjoy the auto if you drive in heavy traffic a lot, too.

A lot of people will call you stupid or crazy for getting an automatic RX-8, but don't listen to them. Don't worry about what other people think or say about your car. If you like it, that's all that matters.

I agree with bkterry13. There's a lot of people, espeically on this webboard that will bash you for liking an A/T. To those I say...good, I think Mazda should pull the A/T option altogether, causing a significant portion of people that would like to purchase the car just because of the styling and handling capabilities. That way, Mazda will sell less, and hopefully not sell enough to reach it's sales goals, effectively causing them to yank any possibilities of an RX-7, or even continuation of the RX-8. Because when it comes down to it, RX-8 owners should just be happy that Mazda keeps making sales, regardless of what packages or transmission options fellow RX-8 buyers choose, that way the Rotary legacy may live on. Nah...screw that. No more auto sales, hopefully no more RX-8 sales, no more RX-8 production, and go to hell rotary engines

You can read all about it here:

The 4 gears are just fine on the AT, don't need more than that.

I disagree, I use to own a 96 Civic auto and the torque difference of these 2 car are about the same. The Rx-8 might have some greater high end power but driving city feels the same. My civic had alot of suspension mods also, so it would have outhandled my RX-8 any day.

You're not the only one with a 6th gen Civic with suspension work. Let's just say that flooring it on the RX-8, even with an A/T tranny feels about the same as a Civic with the STOCK block D16Y8 on 50 shots of dry nitrous. As for driving city feeling the same, you are probably right mainly because most people that drive city do not use more than 80% of the car's potential most of the time. Neither of the two engines were built to be low end monsters.

Guys there is nothing wrong withthe automatic. It is still a great all around car for convenience and touring plusyoure still driving an Rx8 while everyone else is not. Itsjust not meant for instant performance. If you want the responsive performance and full control that this car is capable of thenyou add the extra 1500 to whatever package you want for the stick and you can take full advantage of the engine. Keep inmind that there are still plenty of other cars in the same price range--and some below--as the Rx8 that would also smoke the 6speed stick shift.

I'm 23...been working for 5 years at my current job. I'm a Movie Theatre manager that started out as a ticket tearer.

After 5 years...The still would have been no way I could have afforded one on my own. My girlfriend and I went in together...hence the Automatic.

She's 20, works as a sales associate for a well-known mid-west company.

So if your parents are willing to buy you one, more power to you, just don't make them regret it because they are putting a lot more than just 30,000 dollars on the line for you.
