RX-8 becoming a lemon?
#26
from what i've read/heard climate control doesn't work very well in a lot of cars. including the g35. go read about it on freshalloy. and as far as engine heat, isn't that attributable to the very high engine speeds of the rx8.

We have tons of 2 seaters (like you wouldnt believe, 0-60 in under 3 seconds for £35000 types), but for 4 seater custom sports car there isnt anything.
Theres :
330 BMW - tons more cash
Volvo c70 - £5-7k more
Scooby Sti - similar price but to boy racer + 4WD econo box.
etc etc.
Closest is prolly the 192 Toyota celica or something, but thats 2 door and FWD and slower...
And no, we dont get the G35 at all.

more specifics
JSG - what do you mean by the climate control doesn't work? I'm assuming if it is a technical "CC" that you set a temp and then the car's computer tries to hit that temp regardless of how much higher or lower it is to the current inside temp. Personally, I do fairly well with blue and red and a 4speed fan. I don't use the a/c much in my Miata as if it's warm enough I will usually have the top off, though if it gets really hot I'll throw some cool air in my face. If it's very cool, I'll throw some hot air at my body and feet. The Subaru I drive has no A/C at the present time and as it's mostly for rainy days and winter and the $ to charge freon is so high now it may never have A/C again. So if the 8 has A/C and the 4speed fan control, I'll be fine.
I believe the heat issue will be a non-issue for those of us who have owned RX-7s. The rotaries always run hotter than pistons. They used to say in the owners manual to be sure to NOT park over dry grass as it could very well catch it on fire. I know I read that somewhere. But the 7s had the cat converter very low. And at least one of mine got pretty warm around the tranny tunnel - not to make it uncomfortable inside but you could notice it.
There are a few things about rotaries that need to be paid attention to - one that has been mentioned is to not start it cold, move it 10 feet, then immediately shut it off. That is one of the worst things you can do. Another is to pay attention to the oil change schedule - the one for you all in Japan seems to be very short. And the cooling system must always be kept in top shape.
Last - in the FWIW dept., the 81-91 RX-7s were one of the most reliable cars sold in the US, except in clutch wear - but I think that was due to drivers more than quality of the clutch. I expect similar from this car - especially given that the RX-7 continued in production until August of 2002.

I do not have any problems with my car so far.
But I've heard of one problem in the very first lot.
Over 5000rpm, the oil warning lamp lit.
But seems this problem was already fixed.
And I have no troubles over 5000rpm.
Anyway, when you guys recevie your 8, all the problems must be fixed.
But I want more trouble. I am sure that will make my car more attractive to me.

It was so long ago I think it had something to do with the catylitic converter operation though. The turbos robbing too much of the heat in the exhaust gasses to fully heat up the catylitic converter or some such phenomenon.

I'm starting to think it is a poorly engineered vehicle.
My Cat. Converter is defective at 5000miles. The M flash didn't help and only caused higher RPM problems, the oil pan needed to be replaced, etc.
I mean come on. I paid alot of money for a car that has KIA SEPHIA type problems. This is really getting on my nerves.
Lemon.........who knows......the way mine is looking, absolutely.
Others may not have any trouble.
Doesn't this set off an alarm for anyone? The recalls, the bulletins for major issues like air bags, oil pans, converters. I know this is it's first year (and we should expect some mishaps) but this is ridiculous.
I should of known when Ford bought Mazda it would be like this (made in Japan or not). I'm upset with my car right now so I'm taking it out on Ford:
F.unctional O.perations R.endered D.efective

I've had mine almost a year with ZERO problems. It's a great car. Boards like this will always attract people that have problems, as it gives a good place to vent and compare issues.
Buy it, you'll like it.

If your gonna complain bout the car dont get it, everyone knows its not the fastest thing out there but thats what happens when a first year of a car comes out everyone is all hyped up and then they see its not what they expect but mazda made the car for what its made for. In my opinion it is not the fastest on a straight away torwards sti's, evo's, g35 coupe's but it does out handles them on tracks people please read and learn your cars. Rx8 is a great car and you guyz are complaining about the heat what car isnt like that I been in alot of cars and not all of them have perfect everything that must be in your guyz's lala land where everything is El perfecto. Well I love the car for what it is, it might not be the fastest or whatever you want it to be but I got the car for its rotary love.

The Turkish Delight
I was actually shocked to read the stuff at the beginning of the post! I love this car. It's got everything I wanted. 8700 miles, zero problems. Definitely worth every penny I paid.

Rene needs to post in actual current threads me thinks.
Dude, if your not happy with YOUR car, there's steps you can take to resolve it. Calling the car a lemon in general shows one thing. A very big lack of thought.

I've only got 2000kms on the odometer, but I can categorically say that having researched the car at length prior to purchase. I was actually expecting worse. I had expected to have flooded it at least once, the a/c to blow hot air, airbag to go off, added at least a quart of oil, etc....
I'm glad I decided to ignore the bad press on this and other forums and go for the 8. So far, I haven't been back to the dealer, despite driving short distances a few times, never flooded the engine, haven't added a drop of oil yet, using 87 octane, run the a/c on a few 30 degree (Celsius) days, using it as a daily commuter car.
The only problem I've had is a small buzzing noise from the driverside door speaker when I crank up the bass. Granted the car is still new, but if the first 2000kms is an indication of the next 98000kms, then I guess I'm a happy camper.
