Is the RX-8 the car for me? Or is it not?

I see you’ve met some our resident clowns…
You can’t be any pickier than me, but I can relate to what you’re saying. I thrash my car daily, many of us do. I think Expo tracks his regularly and he’s passed 100,000 with no major probs. I did need a new tranny on my ’05 which alarmed me – it grinded the 3 to 4 but only at redline shifts - but that doesn’t seem to be a common problem. Car’s perfect otherwise; no rattles or quirks, feels better now than new. Nothing better IMO for tossing about but still functioning real nicely as a daily driver/kid hauler. My gas mileage is about 18-20mpg.

Just go test drive it and see if the dealer will let you do an over-night thing.
Then decide if you want it or not, because all you're going to get from the forum is people praising the car, dissing the car, or dissing you
Our opinion shouldn't matter in this at all since you're the one footing the bill for the car and driving it around. We could say it's orgasmic and the best car out there, but you might not think that then you'll unhappy until you can get rid of it.
The things you've heard about the car as far as maintence and reliability are very over exaggerated so don't let that scare you off.
If you don't mind adding oil every now and then, red-lining often, and having a unique car that's very well rounded to be able to handle corners extremely well yet give you some oomphf in the straight aways, then yeah, you'd like this car.
If you want a "Lets race for pinks like in the movies LOL" car then gtfo and get a Vette, screw stangs.
C5's are dirt cheap right now, go get one of those if that's how feel.

You really need to be comfortable with this car's power level. If you are looking to feel good about pulling on people at a stop light this car is not for you.
It handles really nice. The raw numbers you find in magazines are not the absolute best. Its more of a feel kind of thing. This car talks to you.
FWIW,...I am very happy with my decision. Just take your time and make sure you are as well.

I like the car, and I can deal with the lack of power... it doesn't concern me. What DOES concern me, is possibly having to replace a transmission on a newer low mileage car... or a clutch... it seems like there is a lot to go wrong... new motors too? yikes... maybe if I bought a used one for $16,17000 and then had an extended warrantee on it... but wait there goes my modification ability...
By the way, the SRT-4 is not just a straight line car, it has a transmission that can hold 500+whp and a motor that can handle almost 600whp on stock internals... it is actually only rivaled by the Integra Type R and Mazdaspeed Portege in the handling department as well... The car in stock form handles well but improves rediculous amounts with a set of coilovers, unlike others. Hate on the neon thing, and hate on the dodge interior and fit and finish corners being cut... but respect what it does at a track...

Your like person #99999 to go from a neon to something else...
You notice a pattern? If it was so good then why leave it?

Search the site, use you're brain, there doesn't "seem like there is a lot to go wrong." But if YOU think so, then so long.
And your revelations about the SRT Once again, you can mod a cube van to be a good perfomer, it's still lipstick on a pig.

Aside from autocross or the track, you just CAN'T drive any car like a racecar. It's too dangerous for you, the public, and your driving record. So what then if the HP is a bit on the low side? Do you really need more power? For what purpose? I mean, sure I'd like a zillion HP too ... just cause it's cool or whatever. But realistically speaking, it's just not that important (to me). The car still looks amazing at 0 Km/hr.
