My daughter (4 months old) rides in a graco snug ride seat behind the driver. My wife and I are both under 5'6" so there is no problem. We don't have the base in the car because it make the car seat to high pushing the driver seat forward more. Its not hard to reach in and fasten the car seat in because of the rear door. Her stroller is the metroliner from Graco. It fits in the trunk but it takes about all of it. If you have the spare tire you couldn't fit it in at all. Also it only goes in one way, wheels opposite the tire repair kit and down. It took a couple of tries the first time but now that we know how it fits with no problem.
As a side note we brought our daughter home from the hospital in our 8 partially out of pride as its our nicest car and partially because everybody said we were crazy to keep the sports car. I bought the RX-8 because I planned to have children and needed a car that would fit a car seat in the back. People still think we are crazy but it takes us no longer in the car than it does in our truck. I imagine we will end up in a mini-van or similiar (MX Crossport if they bring it out) but that will be a replacement for our truck not the RX-8.
Seeing the baby seats in the back of an 8...just confirmed once again why I love the 8, how can such a sexy looking car actually be useful in the rear seats...WHAT A GREAT CAR WE HAVE!!!
We're expecting our first in June and everyone of my friends with kids says I'll need to get rid of the RX8 and get a minivan... (nooooooooo) I live in a condo so two cars would not be an option ($25K to buy another parking spot!)
The big selling point of the car for my wife is that it can accomodate up to two kids. My question to my fellow RX8ers is have any of you heard or tried the Strolex Car seat? www.strolex.com This seems like a great alternative for us as it does away with the need to lug around a separate stroller to save trunk space. What do you guys think?

Sorry to awaken an old thread, but does anyone have experience with a rear-facing convertible seat in their 8? My son will be outgrowing his infant seat soon, so I need to get a convertible one soon.
I've seen some mention of the Britax Roundabout, but it is pricey. Has anyone used one of the Evenflo seats (Triumph, Titan) that are so highly rated by Consumer Reports?
I'm willing to spend the money on the Roundabout if it's the best one for the 8, but I'm concerned about a couple issues. 1 - How is the front passenger space with the rear-facing convertibles? 2 - How do the seats' bases fit in the "bucket" of the rear seat?
I have a set of 4 year old twins and one 7 year old. The twins sit in two car seats in the back and my 7 year old rides up front in a booster seat. I noticed that the car seats lay back more than they did in our Toyota Avalon. So when the twins take a nap there head doesn't fall over. But I removed the seats tonight and replaced them with booster seats. The twins are now old enough to rided in the booster seats. Plus the seats offer them more leg room than the car seats. My kids love the Rx-8 but sometimes complain about the visibility from the back seats.
We have 2 seats - a Graco Comfortsport (very cheap) and a Britax Marathon (pricy). The Marathon is so obviously of better quality -- if you can afford it, get one. It has a narrower base and seems to fit better in the 8 -- plus it is just light-years easier to install in any vehicle.
When our daughter was RF I put her behind the driver's seat, and I'm 6'2" -- I did not have to move it forward. Now that she is FF she's on the passenger side because she tends to kick the seat in front of her :/

Ditto this (in a couple of years) otherwise, I would have bought a MS Miata
I got a question. I am going to be a 1st time dad this coming January (209) and I am looking for a stroller that can hold a new born through toddler I suppose in the trunk of the 8. What do you guys recomend? I alao have the spare tire assembly in the trunk - so i am looking to put the stroller across in the trunk.
Any helpful hints or directions to look would be much appreciated.
As I said in the other thread you posted in the Metroglide system from Graco but its easiest to find a baby's r us (there are several in the NY area) and test some. You can test both strollers and car seats. The only problem we had with the metroglide is for rear facing we had to push the passenger seat far forward or maybe it was forward facing of the infant carrier. I don't remember.
Either way take the morning and try all you want to see what you like the best.
Hi, I see this thred is slightly out-dated, but I hope someone will reply...
I'm due in March and REFUSE to get rid of my RX8 R3.... I thought it would be awesome to get a Recaro car seat and was wondering if anyone has one/tried on and how it fits in the car? Thanks!
My Odyssey got totaled last night, but an 8 isn't good backup when you have 4. I think the car can be functional with kids with 2 caveats. 1. You are a young parent and can still perform the contortions needed. 2. Your startle reflex is controlled enough that little hands reaching through the effing seat doesn't send you off the road.
I don't have any experience with Recaro other than these, but there isn't anything that i know of that offers real side impact protection once you get out of the infant range. I've had 3 kids in these from about age 2 to 7. Currently the 6 year old rides in style. They are heavy, pushing 35 lbs each, with an internal aluminum frame.

This literally made me LOL at work... that's awesome.
I have a 4 year old and a front facing Safety First Air carseat and it fits just fine. The only issue i have is my son has some long legs so he occasionally likes to practice his kick drumming on the back of my seat lol. Ill post pics of it later on when i get home
excuses, excuses. Both my kids (15 and 20 now) basically grew up in my RX-8 over the past decade.
Lol it's a half excuse :p sometimes you just don't have time to clean the car before a picture. I try to keep mine cleaned out. My big thing is water bottles. I have a 1 hour commute one way each day so I accumulate water bottles in my passenger floorboard
V8dr - that's a rookie mistake, if it's not sex night the kid always goes behind the wife's seat. But glad you got a lift. Remember leather is your friend.
9k - you've had years to get the crumbs out of the seats, that's hardly fair.
One thing I will say about the Recaro, it's the only seat I found (admittedly a good while ago) with a weight range into the 70s that also can be teathered to LATCH. Once they are buckled, the kid will stay put, even if your rush to get the journey over should happen to generate a smidgen of g-force.

We've got 2 kids now - so its just a matter of which i want behind me. I think I'm going to put baby girl (newborn) behind me and let the 4 year old kick the passenger whenever i have one lol.
solving that seat belt buckling challenge with child seats
Hi, I've been doing a lot of research recently and happened to come across this topic.
I wish to contribute that we use seat belt buckle extensions for our kid's child seats so she can buckle the seat belt without having to reach past the side of her child seat.
We got a color matching one from seatbeltextensionpros.com
p.s. I've been lurking this forum for a while because I've been interested in RX8s for a long time but always been intimidated by its (somewhat bad) reputation. Now that I have 2 kids and can't find any other car that is as lightweight and sophisticated (suspension wise) and in this price range, I feel that I am left with no choice but to find a really mint condition one with low mileage as my other family car (when I pay-off our minivan in 2-3 years). Hopefully, there'll still be low mileage examples to be found by then.
p.s.2 There really is no other car out there that is 3000lbs, double wishbone front suspension, cool styling, low center of gravity, 4 seats and 4 doors (a must)
