I had a funny conversation today at a stop light
Guy:"Hey does that thing have a rotary"
Me: "yeap"
Guy: "cool"
Me:"yeap"
Guy: "is it turbo?"
Me:"nope"
Guy:"oh that sucks"
Me:"yeap"
Guy:"did they fix all the problems they had with ti in the 90's?"
Me:"nope its still a rotary"
Then I drove off.

oh, people overboosted it ? no additional cooling and start ******* the car around ?

Aside from the high sticker price, I think that has a lot to do with why Mazda is shy about another factory turbo on a rotary. People will crank up the boost, spit out an apex seal, then tell everyone about how rotaries suck.

They would both need an increase to acheive that kind of speed. The RX8 is drag limited meaning it doesnt have enough umph to push itself any faster than 155 and isnt aerodynamic enough to go any faster with 175-185whp that comes stock.
Im not necessarily proud to say this, but back when I first got my car I went stupid fast in it (not saying due to forum rules), very close to the 'max speed' and it was scary, just didnt feel stable at that high of speeds and the car is very slow to get there. That was my last time ever attempting those kinds of speeds in this car. Not worth endangering myself and other people to attempt to prove to myself that the car is a racecar.
Couldnt imagine this car at 172

The 8 is respectably fast for its price class, it just isn't very quick until you hit about 45 MPH. It doesn't deserve its exaggerated reputation for slowness, but it does lack grunt. No getting around that.
It has four doors, seats four adults, and the only cars anywhere near its price class that can out-handle it are roadsters. It has an engine that loves to be spanked all the way to 9k, and you can redline it at full-throttle all day long and it will just love you for it. It is about the sexiest-looking car you can get without stepping up to a Porsche, and despite the guys who diss it based on magazine numbers women are *always* impressed by it.
Learn to love it for what it is.

A 0 to 60 time of ~6 seconds is something to flaunt about. I agree that it isn't very smart to try to do on a regular basis, but just knowing it is possible makes you proud. The RX-8 is a fast car in terms of demographics. Sports cars are relatively rare in the US, and the RX-8 is an extraordinary one. You don't see too many cars on the road that can go past 150mph.

Ive done 0-60 in the 6's according to random G-tech devices/ dynolicous for the iphone/ crap like that back in the day when I didnt realize I was destroying my car.
I get more of a thrill doing a nice 45-90 WOT pull rather than a tire screeching, burnt clutch smelling, wheel hopping launch just to show off that I can hang with a stock 350Z to 60. Whoop de doo.

Oh right. Boom boom boom...
Oh well, I hope to have mine a very long time (and for the engine to pop at about 95k miles, no sooner...)

Two things surprised me. 1)It was very easy to do, 2) I got full wheel spin, which is contrary to the crap I've been hearing about "a weak chirp" from some people.
I guess weight plays a big part in launches, and I have seen figures for the RX-8's 0 to 60 times be anywhere from 5.9 to 7seconds. I firmly believe for anyone to get 7 seconds, they must be either fat, can't drive, or both. (I'm 167lbs for the record)

So I just bought an RX-8 and tried a 0 to 60 launch. I turned off the AC and the traction control, revved the engine to 5500RPM and floored the throttle. I timed the launch and it easily got to 60mph in 6 seconds.

Seriously, try to avoid the high RPM, clutch drops. Itll cost you overtime.
