RX-8 Etiquette

RX-8 Etiquette
Well, I just picked up my new car. I was driving a '95 Toyota Corolla (5-speed manual) with major hail damage, now I'm driving an '04 Mazda RX-8 (6-speed manual) with one ding and a few minor scratches.
I flew from Durango, CO to Denver, CO (first time flying anywhere) on Friday, a friend picked me up there, and we picked up the RX-8 on Saturday. I drove it the 800 miles back home on Sunday.
My question involves something that happened on the drive home: I saw another RX-8. He let me pass him once, then passed me, blinked his brake lights a few times, and took an exit. It didn't occur to me until I had passed the exit that he may have been asking me to take that same exit for some reason.
Anyway, it was a good thing that I didn't stop, because I hit a fair amount of rain later on in the mountains that apparently turned into snow not long after I had made it through, but I was wondering if this is a regular occurrence - do RX-8 owners have some kind of secret community that I was being recruited into?

Yes, it's called the RX8club(.com). You might have heard of it. Welcome!
Can't say for that specific driver (Fred, stop scaring the new guy!) but I can tell you that a lot of 8 owners love their cars and talking about their cars. Probably just somebody that wanted to chat with you about your ride for a minute, but dunno.
Gratz on the purchase and welcome to the club!

welcome to the CULT!!!.....errr...."club".
Congrats on the purchase of the 8, that's quite a change from your Corolla. 800 miles home must have been a fun little drive.
As for the secret community, nah... I bet he was just acknowledging you and saying 'hi'. Many 8 owners wave or say 'hi' when they spot a fellow rotor-head.

That's how we roll.

hey welcome to the club. these brings and interesting topipc to mind....why dont we rx-8 club members have a universal code of sum sort....such as flashing our parking lights at night or tapping brake lights n such.....a universal rx-8club code would be sik i must say

Heh, sounds like I missed quite the mixture of horror and fun.
On the note of a secret code: I vote we all learn Morse Code and talk to each other with our brake or head lights (depending on what position we're in).
Not that I expect to see any of you guys way down here. Our nearest Wal-Mart is in Cortez (40 miles away), and for a Best Buy, I have to drive to Farmington, NM (200 miles away).
By the way, turns out I only drove 430 miles, plus a few for getting lost - not 800. I was going by my tach, but my tach apparently started out at 250 or so when I got the car (plus a hundred or so for driving the car back to Denver from Colorado Springs, plus the 430 from the trip, plus 20 for getting lost, and I end up around 800).
It was great fun, though - I took a "scenic route" that wound around puddles (I'm from Minnesota, and I have yet to see a real lake in Colorado), creeks (same for rivers as for lakes), and mountains (... the people around here might call them hills). It had a whole lot of 30 mph turns (which I took at 70), and even a few 20 mph ones (which I took at a little over 60). VERY fun drive home. And I didn't even kill anyone!

Heh sorry no secret code.
I just know when I'm driving and I see another 8 we normally notice each other and either give a wave or try to pass each other up.
Most people who own RX8s know how to take care of their car and since it's such a "niche" car take a lot of interest in it. I would say that RX8 owners know more about their car than a lot of other car owners simply because the fact that most people by the RX8 because it's unique and attracts a different crowd.

If you're using your brakes on the highway you're doing it wrong. Gas pedal or bust.

I would guess that he was just saying "hi." If you would have followed him, you probably would have scared him! I usually wave or give a thumbs up when I see another 8, most of the time I get a wave back. Last week another 8 gave me a quick couple of flashes of his brights while passing by the opposite direction.
Oh, and congrats on the RX-8. It's a great car. You'll love it!

At any rate, I can't say much since I'm a noobie to the RX8 life as well. Learn your car though. She's quite unique from other makes/models, and she loves it when you show an interest in her. Enjoy!

Welcome to the "Club"
there definately is an etiquette amoung us - be sure you follow the rules
just make sure to avoid the "Rice" and you'll be ok - for the most part, we do offer a great deal of help on this forum - the rest of us just spam and troll
Happy Motoring!!

doesn't appear to be the case here in Miami i picked up my 8 about a month ago (traded up from my '91 miata).since then I've signaled about five other 8 drivers and it appears no one shares my enthusiasm over these awesome cars..

I can vouch for that! When I have run into any issue with my 8 I searched and searched until I found the answer. If couldn't find it - someone was always willing to help out with their advise. This club is full of great people!

Depending on your region, many rx-8 owners enjoy comparing speeds across a given rpm range in a particular gear.
There aren't too many of these cars on the road, so when the opportunity comes along many owners will go out of their way to seize the opportunity to check the relative health of their motors and exchange helpful protips.

******EVERYONE DO THE REWIRE FOG LIGHT MOD*******
and then we can flash fogs at each other to know if we are in rx8club or not.
simple, expecially day time, people will not know how to turn on just fogs without head lights.
if we see fogs blinking with no headlights, or just parking lights, we can assume its a fellow rx8club member, and it will mean hello!!!!!!!
here's the page for the foglight reiwring. very simple, very very simple, took me 10 minutes total, less even, from the second i opened the hood, to the closing.

Whenever I pass another 8, I wave, flash my lights or swerve around a slight bit. If they are behind me, I will tap my brakes a few times to signal a "Good bye" if we are turning off.
I love niche cars.

Oddly, I almost never get recognition from a fellow RX-8 driver on the road. I used to beep or wave and all I ever got was a deadpan look back. Not even a friggin' smile. Only once did I have a little leap-frog fun with another 8.
Things were a lot different with the Miata. I'd get honks and waves even years after I got the car. The original Miata had a great "handshake" though -- "blinking" the pop-up headlights
The 8 gets more compliments in the parking lot than the Miata did, though. On the flip side, kids always loved the Miata. Guess it looked enough like a toy car that they could relate!
