Truth is theres probably a ton of people over age 25 in this forum that have done stupid **** in their 8 but are smart enough not to open their mouth about it. Its a sports car, we all have our skeletons in our RX8 closet Its not JUST <20 yr old drivers that do it, just <20 year old drivers that talk about it

truth is, how many people buy an MT RX8 to drive like a granny. I mean there are some, but the majority are spirited drivers. Doesnt mean you cant be responsible though.

I cant even count how many times i have takin the 8 past 135-140. I got my first ticket for speeding and changing lanes in to on coming traffic(sounds bad but i was 7 over and the cop thought the car coming was to close when i passed on a 2 lane road,2 months after i got the 8), then 3 weeks ago(4 months of driving) i got a ticket for racing(95 what he clocked me at,i dont know how cause i was doing 125, with 2 other cars) and i have not wrecked it but have come close, and after my 2nd ticket i have been driving normal.

honestly i love the car and want nothing else except a ferrari maybe , but i sometimes wish i didn't have it cause it gets me in to trouble cause its so fun to drive fast.

just saying that just because you don't think you wont drive fast now don't mean you wont when you get caught up in the moment. and yes there are prob 1230948 people that will tell me, "your wrong thats its just me and not him", and yes i am not saying he will be like me, just giving my story..
Lol, i get what you are saying. All my friends tell me that... but i don't know i guess i cant lie and i might test its abilitys once or twice. but otherwise i believe ill be pretty responsible in this car. and i know i cant mess up cause than i get my car taken away. so i guess that will put me on hold. but thanx for sharing i understand where you're coming from.

Yeah, that whole driving thing gets annoying. It's better to just ride the breaks all day

Hahahahaha. If that was true, I would drive while having my foot on the brake. Too bad it's not...

just keep it in second the entire time and you won't ever have to shift in traffic

my theories:
1. Just CRAZY COINCIDENCE. Maybe they camouflage well with the road and tend to get into accidents?
2. Just for some of the owners that are on this forum Try to find an 06 or newer. But it could depend on the owner too.
3. Owners trade or sell early probably by rising gas prices with not-so-great mileage, a higher insurance, owners too lazy to top off oil or experienced engine problems, owners scared off by the bad rep on this forum.

MY theories:

1. Over exaggerated myth saying silver 8's wreck more is what I've gathered.

2. Not for the majority of owners. Early model issues plus lack of knowledge on maintaining the car plus the fact that Mazda seems to replace an engine at the dealership instead of diagnosing/repairing on spot plus the fact that engine problem threads on this site stick out like a soar thumb which seems to get spread throughout the entire automotive community, all contribute to the impression that there are many engine problems.

3. If you mean gas mileage: Higher output or turboed rotary engines have never been great on gas- especially when revved high which is easy to do when driving this car. People assume since it is a small engine it should get great gas mileage like a small piston engine. The power to capacity of the engine is phenomenal. The problem seems further compounded by the high gas prices. Most comparable cars only really get slightly better gas mileage.

Rx8....good first car?....Hell yes.....

If your wondering if an Rx8 wouild be a "good first car" I have to say it wouldn't........IT WOULD BE A GREAT FIRST CAR .......we should all be so lucky.

First cars are the ones we always remember best. The ones we look back on later in life with such fond memories. Why not make a great car ? Most of us get someone else's scraps, dad's old wagon, mom's old minivan, some other kids beater, you know what I mean, the left-overs, the rejects, the lemons. It sorta goes with the territory. But every once in a while someone gets a real "gem" of a first car. When I was in high school it was the kid who's father owned the buick dealership, or some other kid who's father had a big construction business. Then there's the one who had an uncle with no kids of his own who saved a mint condition convertible for 20yrs just to hand it over to his favorite nephew.
My first car was a lightly used 1970 Cutlass Supreme. The car was mint. It had it all....great looks....a powerful 350 rocket V8....and a large comfortable back seat. That was all I needed ! ( big back seats seem to be in much less demand these days?? ) The car belonged to my aunt who was a real Sunday driver. It was garaged and meticulously maintained racking up just 73,000 miles in 10 years.
Like all good things it was not to last.......pardon me I digress. I'll spare you my life story.

Here's what you can do;

1.) Make two lists, one containing all the pluses ( reasons in favor of the 8)
the other listing all the negatives ( reasons not to make it the 8)

2.) Rate the items from the two lists you generated assigning each item a
number that corresponds to it's importance....say 1 to 5 ...5 being the most
important. Then total the two lists and let the numbers decide.

For Example: plus / minus

looks/style.........5 car envy.....0
performance......5 ???????.......0
room for 4.........5 ????????......0
great value........5 ???????.......0
unique...............5 Mileage ......1

Hell there aren't any negatives buy the dam car....You'll Love it....( even if your friends hate it !)

Driving is like anything in the world that requires skill. It takes a while to become good at it. Did you jump right into the deep end when you first started learning to swim?

With a less powerful car, you reduce the amount of damage you can do to yourself and to others while still obtaining that invaluable driving experience. Not to mention reducing the temptation to do something with the car that's beyond your skill level.

i drove a prius for 6 months before i got my 8

i drove it 45 miles a day from school to work and stuff.
then traded that in. ( g'damn mpg on 8)

i drive an 08 saturn sky on the weekends for fun.
and im only 16... so what? sure im not even close to being experienced of a driver as most everyone here. but im not bad. i've got a friend thatts wrecked his 350z 4 times in the past year....

and no, i dont street race. we do time trials. out in the middle of no where. in texas.

i would say get something else before you try an 8.... its very different.

Heh, I didn't even think about that. If you want to appreciate the 8, drive something else for your first car Now if the 8 is your first car, be careful making turns when driving another car

An Altima doesn't have much power and has tremendous understeer (AKA the car isn't fun to drive).

Now a fun car like the 8 is what can get some people into trouble. It's fairly quick, revs very high, has very good grip, and has oversteer on demand. Someone who had the 98 Altima (not in reference to me, but....) cool be a perfectly normal driver. Then they get behind the wheel of an 8, and all kinds of crazy **** goes through their head.

You make a good case, but there's a difference between being a really responsible driver and just being someone in a car that isn't capable of doing anything dangerous or encouraging to drive at the limit.
Pssh,

I've Drifted my Altima, done 128 (stupid governors lie I wants my 130 Damnit) in it, I have had so much fun in this car, I know the limits of this car in and out, wet and dry (not ready to find out in snow just yet...). Now I'm getting into something where the limits are much higher, the capabilities are greater, still practical, and the fun factor is off the charts, but to be honest its a different beast.

My best recommendation for any car, ABANDONED AIR FIELD. Take it out there and learn what it can really do. Learn how it feels when its about to break loose, when its broken loose, and learn how to correct it. Do that on the weekends for about two weeks, then get new tires, and your set. Enjoy.

Another thing about the RX8 is that it is the best handling and one of the safer cars on the road today. Were I ever to get into a general emergency situation, such as something in the road or a sudden stop, I would feel much safer behind the wheel of my 8 than a Honda Civic that takes 3 years to stop and just as long to turn...

i think its funny that older ppl assume they can ALWAYS drive better than teens...there is always the exception to the rule

i say the rx8 is a great first car if you are responsible

Haha its funny i go to a school where all the kids dads are like lawyers or rich in some way. All the cars in the lot are either a brand new BMW or Benz. Or some sort ot 50k+ car. But i might say ive lived in my city for the past 6 years and maybe seen an 8 once or twice. I love the rarity.

1.So they the silver 8 blends with the road more so it crashed more? lmao is there any truth to this or they just say that?

2. Ill probably be getting an 08.. so i dont think i should have engine problems.

3. ohhh. i understand. thanks.
