The RX-8 and flooded roads

For those of you outside the UK, you may or may not know it but this year the UK has been hit by flooding across many parts of the country. Last week it was our turn in my part of the country.

I was faced with an 18 mile journey home from Hereford along roads that had had 5 inches of rain dumped on them within a couple of hours. Low slung the RX8 may be but it went through some pretty deep water without much complaint.

The only audible problem was some squeaking from one of the belts that must have either been submerged or had had water thrown up onto it.

The only time I came really close to coming unstuck was when I went down a flooded road close to home and which was much deeper than I thought. The water starting to come over the bonnet was the giveaway. I've never put it in reverse so sharpish, as I revved the engine to keep the water out of the exhaust i could here it burbling away underneath the water, as I slowly reversed out of the flood.

Pretty impressed by the RX-8. The only slight worry is the oil patch that has appeared underneath the car post-flood. Fingers crossed that that it's nothing much.

Interesting. The air intake is high on the 8 except the VAFD.

I would never try to go through a folld zone with my 8.

That's a pleasant surprise. With the engine mounted so low, I would've guessed the 8 would be more vulnerable to deep water.

Isn't the air the only thing that really matters? Tanks extend the air intake so they can go through water.

You should have enough exhaust pressure to prevent water from getting into the engine. The only problem would be if you killed the engine. The problem is a hot cat hitting the water. It will crack the cat.

Be careful of moving water. 2 inches can move a car.

You had water come over the hood of the car? Dear lord that must have been deep. You might wanna have your car checked out.
