RX-8 gas mileage
Anyone have any idea about what kind of mileage this ride is gonna get? Considering what the FD gets, and that this is a far newer and more technically advanced engine, I'd expect something >25mpg, but you never know.
Also wondering if it'll be a LEV vehicle (maybe even ULEV?)...

You know, that's not entirely true...first off, with 255 hp in the 3rd gen RX-7 and it averages around 20-25 mpg or so. Since 1995 (the last year they were imported here) it's been 7 years, and with that a lot of technological advances have been made, not the least of which is the Renesis engine, which makes 250bhp *normally aspirated*, which is most certainly cleaner burning than the turbocharged FD.
Anyway, the point is moot...I'm not saying I won't buy it, I'm just saying that it *is* possible to have lots of HP and decent mileage.

Hey, first post. I luckily stumbled upon this site as a link over at http://www.miata.net if any of you are Miata lovers as well.
Anyway, on this topic, I had read awhile back that the RENESIS was 40% more fuel efficient at idle than the 13B twin turbo of the FD3S. While I understand idle and everyday driving are not necessarily the same (we probably can't expect a 40% increase in overall mileage), I would guess that there should be a substantial jump in overall mileage from the FD engine.
Seems rotaries have a bad rap for being gas guzzlers. To them I say they aren't any worse than comparable pistons that put out the same power, and if you can show me a 1.3L that puts out 250 horses I'd be surprised. Most 250+ V6's will probably get worse mileage.
Anyway, nice to be here.

Mazda has done a lot of work to improve gas mileage on the rotary engine per an interview with Mark Fields. Reliability, Fuel Economy, Oil consumption and emissions were targeted by Mazda's engineers for improvement over the 3rd Gen RX7. I suspect Mazda needed to improve MPG so as not to screw up their CAFE number.

I say RX-8 is far from frugal. It gets worse gas mileage than some of the V8s like LS1 & LS2 (corvette). I average around 18mpg with half city and half highway driving (when i am not driving fast).
06 VW GTI with DSG, I average around 31mpg highway and 26mpg city. Yeah, it's possible to achieve high power and decent mileage. Just not rotary engines.

Does better than an SUV....
Does better than a 1950 Buick
Does not do as well as an 15 year old Mazda 323 - but then it doesn't hold 2 hay bales either!
