Question Is the RX-8 the "Nerd's Revenge"?

Ever notice that RX-8s (and rotaries in general) attract a lot of attention from the pocket protector crowd? Its probably the high engineering content of this car that the cat-loving "egg-heads" find so indearing.

LOL.

Just being controvesial. Feel free to flame me now. :D

Here let me take my keyboard out from my pocket protector and reply....

I haven't really noticed anything, I haven't been an owner long enough to say one way or another. I'm sorta a techy person so perhaps you could say I fall into your category, but I wouldn't call myself a 'nerd'. lol.

As a hard core geek who carried a slide rule in high school and currently owns a Software Company, be nice to Geeks....you might end up working for one!

And yes, at my first ever autocross last weekend, I took 7th of 31 in the RX8 division.

I might be a geek, but I'm a fast geek!

heh.

Check the median age for those buying an RX-8.

I dare say you'll be hard pressed to find a significant number in their teens for any car in the 30k price range.

<OFFTOPIC>And boy was that autocrossing fun. If any of you haven't tried it yet.. make it a mission to do so in the near future. I never knew staying in first gear could be so fun. </OFFTOPIC>

Not where I am. The car of choice for 16 to around 25 is the IS or a 325i/330.

I think the fact that we are all checking/posting to this (forum on the Internet) several times a week says we are "computer geeks". Who knows; the majority of RX-8 owners might not frequent such websites often.

I'm not an IT guy tho, and have been a fan of RX's ever since I got my FC in high school.

Been a nerd since the 70's. I don't know if it's an engineering thing, but I do agree that there is an attraction there. I mean a rotary engine is mainly a ideological persuit.

Besides, at $30K before mods, the car isn't within everyone's reach. And us geeks (especially us older ones) have all the money

Yeah, but your last year as a "teen" is 19.

Cat lovin', long-haired, hippie freak software engineer.

I dig cars that are unique (hence the Aztek from '00 to '04) and/or purple (my Pontiac Sunfire GT from '97-'00). I think the rotary design attracts geeks because it's different, and even if I don't know a damn thing about fuel/air ratios or how to drive a stick shift, I can still sound cool talking about the triangular offset cam that effectively mimics three-cylinders in about half the space and at three-quarters the weight.

To quote Batman... "It's the car, right? Chicks dig the car."

No wonder we have so many here in Austin! A good percentage of the population here is employed in technology jobs of one kind or another.

I think the premise is good, but the connection is all wrong.
It's probably that technogeeks that own RX8's are more likely to be found on a computer forum than non-tecnogeeks. So I think the results are skewed.

Re: Is the RX-8 the "Nerd's Revenge"?

One of the guys at the rotary meet in Orlando mentioned that.. He asked how many people were in Band or some kind of academic club in high school/ middle school and a large proprtion of the people at the table raised thier hand...

Ummm I'll be starting my common first year engineering soon (later, get into electrical engineering), so does that make me a nerd too? :D
