RX-8 Recall Question

Hello all,

I have been in my RX8 for a little over 1 month now and problems are starting to creep up. While researching, I came across Rosenthal Mazda's Service Bulletin page. I saw two recalls that came out both of which were for RX8's made in April-August of '03 (mine quialifies). The recall bulletin said that there would be a sticker under the hood if the recall service was performed. I do not have anything under the hood therefore I don't think the reapir was perforrmed and I wanted to know if this has happened to anyone else. I believe this is blatent neglegence and according to the recall notice, the car is not safeto drive. Your opinions?

Thanks,
Jeff

You're correct. Negligence is unfortunately common on this point. However, the "sticker under the hood" is not compelling evidence one way or the other. Your dealer should be able to provide a printout from reading the ECM that indicates whether the relevant recalls have been performed. If your dealer resists, take it to another dealer and ask that they read the ECM. You might also want to take a hardcopy of the recall notice (available on the Rosenthal site) that indicates the dealer is NOT to sell the car or perform any other service without assuring that the recalls have been performed.

I've found that having copies of the recall notices and TSB's has a salutory effect on getting the dealer's attention regarding documented issues.

Did you first try calling the dealer or Mazda USA? They can tell from the VIN # if the work was done.

My dealership service department is closed and I assume Mazda corporate is as well being it's Saturday. I will follow up on Monday.

I totally agree with you that they should have resolved any issues before releasing the car to you. Although since it was a later model of the 8 they most likely were trying to get it out the door fast, especially with 05 right around the corner. If I were you I would go back there and tell them that they put your safety at risk when delivering the car to you with two WELL known recalls. I don't know if it will get you anywhere but that's what you could say. Good luck with you new car.

Recall?

I think you're referring to Service Bulletins, just to clarify things. Recalls are usually safety related and the company is obligated by the NHTSA to contact each affected owner directly. The Service Bulletins are info for the service departments to generally address customers concerns when the concerns are raised.

Good point..

It has also been addressed here that the lack of stickers does not mean that the recalls are actually still open.

Any dealer should be able to run the VIN on your car and verify the status.
